How did your puffer act funny? Was it flicking against objects in the tank? Not eating?
When puffers darken in colour it is usualy in response to stress.
Or sometimes when they sleep.
How much tank water did you change a week and how did you clean the filter medium (sponge).

Puffer fish will eat pretty much all types of coral (but some i have been able to keep with coral and had no trouble at all. If they are circular in shape and about the size of a grain of sand, yes they are. They are not a problem and they come in to your tank with your live rock. Hope that helps

Dog faces are more likely to get pushed around by other marine fish (Triggers i'm looking at you). Always a one off with attitude i am sure, but mostly they are just the sweetist things.
