Lost a Puffer/Found a Puffer

Our Green Spotted Puffer, Dante, died about ten days ago. My wife and I are very depressed over it. I bought him at WalMart over a year ago for our freshwater tank, not knowing what he was. When I found out, instead of getting rid of him, I set up a 29g brackish tank where he lived until last week. ...

Re: The GSP Dilemma .....

Addendum to my first post: I fed my puffer a ghost shrimp for the first time today. He didn't pay much attention to it at first, but eventually cornered it in a cave-live area, apparently unsure of what to do. During this time, his back went almost completely dark (belly still white) while he stared...

Re: The GSP Dilemma .....

I'm new to the GSP thing, and have only had mine for a little over a month. I have never seen mine with a black or even grey belly, even when I first got him and he was in extremely stressful situations. The most he gets is blackish marks on either sides of the mouth, and these dots seem to come and...

Re: What does all of this mean?

The tank was not cycled; he went into this tank as an emergency solution. I've been doing daily water changes to compensate for this. Should I change more than 20%? per day until it cycles? Also, would it make more sense to try to cycle it as a brackish tank to begin with, since the freshwater bacte...

Re: What does all of this mean?

The SG does not even register on the (cheap) hydrometer, making me think the overall salinity is not that much greater than tap water. My last tests were: ammonia: 0, Ph: 7.6, nitrate 10, nitrite .5. This was a few days ago. I'm going to test again tomorrow after the tanks settles a bit. I've done s...

What does all of this mean?

I am in the process of gradually raising the salinity of my green spotted puffer's tank. Yesterday I was doing a water change and did an experiment to see how much salt it took to raise a gallon of water to the brackish requirement he'll eventually need. I put about 1/2 cup of salt in a gallon and g...

Re: can a gsp be kept in fresh water all its life

i would love to but would not no where to start or how to find some 1 that would want him Call around to local LFS. I was able to give one of mine to Petco, believe it or not. The girl who manages the fish area seemed very happy to get him, put him in a brackish tank by himself, and said he'd proba...

Re: When to up the salinity for GSP

Thanks! I got a hydrometer and it is currently soaking in salty water as per the instructions. I'll be able to start taking readings tommorrow.

When to up the salinity for GSP

My GSP is about 1.5" long, and came from a fresh-water aquarium. Since I got him a week ago I've been gradually adding a little more marine salt to his tank. He started out in fully fresh, and I add about 1/2 tsp of salt per gallon when changing the water, which I've done just about daily - 20%...

Re: GSP Questions

Those are great looking tanks! What are the rules as so what I can put in the tank? Can I boil rocks from outside and put them in? (Was told I can do this for FW tanks.) Can I put shells in there? (Was told not to do this with FW tank.) I don't like a lot of the fake stuff I see at the store. Also ....

GSP Questions

1. I've read that GSPs need a complex environment to keep them from getting bored. What the heck does that mean? 2. Crunchy things keep their teeth healthy. I got some snails from the LFS and they ate them up pretty quick. What else can I give besides snails, maybe something easier to keep around? I...
