GSP overheated, how to help recover?

Salinity- 1.02, I can get the other numbers if necessary, but considering the double water change below, I don't think the numbers are bad. Tank size- 35 gallons with one 3 inch GSP (not including tail), he's around five years old. Water change- 12/31 (normal 50% change), then again in 1/3 (emergenc...

Re: Puffer seems to have hernia?

It was a hernia. We couldn't find him in the tank this morning (he's super tiny) so we went to work not knowing his status. We searched the tank when we got home and found his tiny body in a hole in a decoration. :( I hope these pictures can at least help someone diagnose their own puff... not that ...

Re: Puffer seems to have hernia?

I've added the epsom salt and took a few pictures in case it's something more serious... Sorry so fuzzy. The last two pictures are of him swimming down, so you can see the bump on the left side. It's hard to see in the picture of his left side because my camera is crud. http://rahenna.com/temp/lordp...

Re: Puffer seems to have hernia?

Thank you, PP. I've been using Melafix but didn't think of the epsom salt. I'll add some tonight when I get home.

Puffer seems to have hernia?

Yesterday morning I found my new baby puffer, Lord Puffington, (about 1 inch long) stuck to the intake on the Aquaclear in his tank (36g). Since he had never had a problem swimming near the intake before, I suspect he must have been fast asleep at the time, panicked and puffed, and a little bit of s...

Re: Rest in Peace Mr. Fattykins

Just so nobody worries about the other three puffers, I have very good news. We got power back on Friday and everyone else is perfectly ok. I surprised and happy the others made it through! For a while I was going back during my lunch break to fill plastic baggies with ice to keep the temperature be...

Rest in Peace Mr. Fattykins

Mr. Fattykins (GSP) - July 2004 to Sept. 21 2008 He died after 9 days without electricity. We are supposed to have power back today and he had just had a 75% water change on Saturday. He was getting big water changes every other day. A few hours after that, we managed to find a grocery store with wo...

Re: HELP! Power out in Houston!

Yes, temperature is good - 80 degrees indoors and humid. We're not feeding them, at least for a few days when the water comes back on. It was on with very low pressure when we went back this morning. I figure the best we can do without electricity is water changes. No way to move them... tanks are 5...

HELP! Power out in Houston!

As you probably all know, Hurricane Ike hit Texas on Saturday night and knocked out power for almost all of Houston. Estimates are anywhere from 2-4 weeks before power is fully restored. We managed to escape to a friend's house, but our puffers had to stay behind. Is there anything we can do to impr...

Re: "Pufferfish" in different languages

Here is Puffer fish in kanji: パッファーの魚 How can we pronounce it? Would you pls try to spell it in English? By the way I think "Baiacu Verde Pintado" is GSP :) and, puffer fish is baiacu en Espanol, isn't it? In German it must be something like kugelfisch or kugel fisch. That would be "...

Re: "Pufferfish" in different languages

It's "fugu" in Japanese, as most people know. The characters mean "river pig", appropriately enough.

Maybe someone has? Could someone on the GSP genome project help if you contacted them? I think at least one type of marine puffer has been researched too.

RIP Bittypuff (June 04 - Feb 08)

One of my 2 F8s died last night after being sick for a week. At the beginng of February I had to trim his teeth because he was having trouble eating and was getting skinny. Afterwards, he was eating very well and got back his normal shape and was generally looking much healthier. Last weekend he sta...
