Re: Tank is yucky now
I forgot to add earlier that we didn't do the salt all in one water change. It got changed over.. a few months, water changes twice a month and added a bit then. Salt hasn't been added in probably 2 months, so I guess we probably started this 6 months ago. It's never registered on the other hydromet...

Re: Crap! Need to repeat trimming!
Mine didn't go belly up either, so I guess I wouldn't worry about it. He didn't wake up during the trimming, recovered just fine. But it still wasn't fun so now we have a .5gal snail tank. We also forgot to use gloves so I felt bad, worried I'd hurt him rubbing stuff off, but he was ok.

Re: Tank is yucky now
Well it looks prettier already at least. Did the water change, about 30% only though. Carrying giant buckets of water through the house while pregnant is not fun, so we'll just do that daily instead of 50%. I got the new hydrometer but it's sitting on the counter with water in it for 24 hours. I thi...

Re: Tank is yucky now
Cool, thanks. And yeah, the water's not good. They said ammonia is .25, nitrates were really high, 200. Salinity is 1.005 though. I got my own testing stuff but it says fresh/salt and has 2 different color cards. Which do I use? ETA: The nitrates did not test that high for me just now. On the salt c...

Re: Tank is yucky now
Thanks. I'll grab a different hydrometer and take a sample to the store too. See and I thought the biowheel was a good thing. There is more salt on the outside of the tank now. If we clean it off regularly it's ok. Any other reason to get rid of it? Is the salt going to hurt the biowheel itself? We ...

Tank is yucky now
It used to be gorgeous.. pretty clear bluish water. Everything got a dark red coating on it, the gravel, fake plants, and even some on the glass. But even before the cyanobacteria the water changed and it's just not as pretty. Doesn't catch the light and shimmer, etc. We put a couple ghost shrimp in...

Re: Overgrown beak
Yep, we added the 3 drops to a bit of the water, shook it up and added it to the rest. Same with the extra drop. I'd read another article that gave humane euthenasea using clove oil and vodka (awwwww) but it said to shake it up. He's so happy now. Not sure if it's the trimming or the influx of baby ...

Re: Overgrown beak
Well we did it! Thanks for the link. We got the clove oil water and fresh water ready. He swam right into the net, scooped him out with a bowl and transferrer into clove oil water. He didn't freak at all or try to swim away frantically in the little bowl. We started with 3 drops in 3 cups of water. ...

Re: Overgrown beak
Thanks. That doesn't sound quite as scary as the other ones I'd read. We'll give it a shot tonight :D One site said that GSP are brackish but will need to go to full saltwater beyond 4". We have no intentions of starting up a saltwater tank at this point. I don't want him dying because of it. H...

Overgrown beak
We've noticed that Mr. Puffer's beak is just too big. I'm not sure what to do with him (or her, what do I know?). We've fed him snails before but I'm not sure if he eats them. He goes after them when we put them in but they fall down and he leaves them alone. We don't have a tank full of snails so I...
