Diatoms are formed from excess phosphates and silicates in the water. The phosphate will continue to accumilate in your tank unless you use some sort of media filter to get them out. And yes your media is probably bad. When you add phosphate removing media you can assume it is good until the diatoms...

Yeah I'm mainly interested in salt water right now. I had a congo for about 6 months but traded it for some salt water things. But if anyone has some cute fw puffers let me know. I like seeing them in person.

I had one in a 55g tank and was a really fun fish. Would mainly come out at night and eat crayfish. During the day he would hide in the cave i had made for him. I had one for a little while but on my way to cali from north carolina my tank busted in my car and had to sell him in tennessee somewhere. Anyway they are fun to watch and live in caves. Mostly active at night and eats crayfish brutally. love ghostshrimp too.

You need a hydrometer to check salinity and there is difference between aquarium salt and marine salt.

Thanks for the ID!!! I'll have to let my LFS know they were wrong and i made a good choice. I'll get a better camera and snap some good photos. but my acrylic tank is all scratched up cause i bought it used for 100. it is 125 gallons.
