will commercial play sand work well with gsp's?

I have a green spotted puffer and right now, the puffer is in a brackish water tank...but planning to move it to a full marine tank.

I currently have gravel and really do no like the look of it. Would commercial play sand be okay to use as a substrate?
How much sand should I use? I have a 30 gallon tank, (30x12 inches - bottom surface area)

I had my water tested..no ammonia or nitrates or nitrites...so I dont see why you all keep talking about poisons...

I have 2 GSP and another puffer. For two days now, the GSP puffers belly have slowly but surely have been turning dark. One second its a noticebly dark grey..then the next...its light grey. Why is this happening? The third puffer, not sure what species, isnt grey. I bought all of them from Walmart. ...
