Re: Brown spots forming in the tank!

I use the liquid tests.
Good to ear the brown algae isn't a menacing sign.
So, I should use more water conditioner to help the levels? I put one drop per gallon of water changed...

Brown spots forming in the tank!

I have had my 2" Figure 8 for only 3 weeks, and am have a lot of brown spots forming on the plants, decorations, and even glass. I keep just the single fish in a 12 gallon tank with a full hood and a built in Penguin System with a Bio-Wheel. I have been doing 25-50% WC 1-2 times per week, and h...

Re: How big is your puffer??

Octavia is 2" including tail, Figure 8 Puff. I have had her for 3 weeks, so I doubt she's grown in that time. I think she's under a year old. :)

Re: pH Down, Ammonia up with Saltwater addition

I took the water in and it looks like my stick on tester is WAY off. pH was 8.0, ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates .5. Way better than it looked according to the stick on thing. I got fishy home, dripped her and now she's in the tank. I just added the B-S. We decide to name her "Octavia" :) ...

Re: pH Down, Ammonia up with Saltwater addition

It is a penguin filter, but it's all built into the hood with the lights so I can't put a drop-behind filter on the tank. The nice thing is that there's no way for the fish to jump out- it's all enclosed except for a tiny strip to let power cords out (less than 1/2" tall). I've had good experie...

Re: pH Down, Ammonia up with Saltwater addition

Yes, I'm pretty sure it's been refrigerated. I have it in my fridge now, and the shop was very adamant about "keep it refrigerated!" They are a pretty good LFS (hey, they keep brackish puffers in brackish water which is more than I can say about a lot of shops) and they specialize in just ...

Re: pH Down, Ammonia up with Saltwater addition

OK, so I should put the new cartridge back in? I'll do that now.
I am using crushed shells as the substrate.
Oops, I meant to say ammonia is at .02 instead of .2

pH Down, Ammonia up with Saltwater addition

My 12 gallon tank was cycled at freshwater, so I took out the filler fish this morning and brought them and the water sample to the LFS. It tested at 7.8 Ph, 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, .25 Nitrate. They advised that I add instant ocean. I took 50% water from the tank, mixed it with 1 cup of the salt in a...

Re: Getting ready for a Figure 8

I took the water to the LFS and it was 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, .25 nitrates (all good). :) Right now it's reading 1.008. Will the puffer be comfortable at this level if he's coming from 1.012? Should I try to get it up to 1.010? I'm sure I killed a bunch of bacteria by raising it so quickly, that's w...

Re: Getting ready for a Figure 8

Thanks for the advice! I got the water tested, and it was all good. I am now getting the levels of the Salinity up then I'm putting more Bio-Spira in. I should get my puffer tomorrow if everything goes as planned! :) Any good name suggestions for a Figure 8?

Re: Getting ready for a Figure 8

I found my hydrometer, but it is stupid! It only goes down to 1.010 so I'll have to take it back and get one that goes lower... I stuck it in and of course it's below .10.... I haven't added any salt yet. However, hopefully with the shells as the bottom it should help with salinity, right?

Re: Getting ready for a Figure 8

Thanks for the welcome, and thanks for the prompt response! I'm not sure of the salinity right now. I bought a salinity measuring thing but I seemed to have misplaced it. Still looking, and will post what it is when I find it. If I do put salt in quickly, can't I just buy more Bio-Spira to offset the...

Re: Getting ready for a Figure 8

Nobody has anything to say? OK, brief rundown of the questions: 1. Is .012 too high of salinity for brackish? 2. Should I start out the tank at .012 and work it down or start out lower (like .008 or .010)? 3. Will bringing the salinity up kill the bacteria? 4. If so, will buying another packet of Bi...
