Re: New modestus- different behavior?

Good point, thanks. Anyone have a guesstimate as to how often a modestus' teeth need to be trimmed? I know it probably varies a lot based on diet, but is there like a typical sort of idea? I might have to have my husband do the trimming, my hands are not as steady as they could be because of some me...

Re: Tap water conditioner

Are you sure the water conditioner is causing an ammonia spike and it is not your tap water itself? I know in my city our tap water contains chloramines and it also shows 1 ppm ammonia readings straight out of the tap. In this case, you want to make sure you are using a water conditioner that remove...

Re: New modestus- different behavior?

Hypothetically, if you leave the puff in that concentration of clove oil will he eventually die if you take took long or he stays in it too long? or is that amount actually safe? Is the need to rush to avoid death or permanent injury in the clove oil, or is it because he will soon wake up?

Re: New modestus- different behavior?

Wow thanks for all the great info, guys! I plan to use clove oil since it is much easier to obtain. Is there already a sticky on puffer dentisty and the info in this thread? There should be!

Re: New modestus- different behavior?

:( well the 20 gallon was meant for him, mainly. Everyone is getting along but I guess soon I'll be setting up another. Just have to make room. My cycle is going well, today my ammonia was 0.5, nitrites were 0.25 and nitrate was 10. It's good because my tap water has 1 ppm ammonia, it is my understa...

Re: New modestus- different behavior?

I remember you, PufferPunk! I came on here a lot years ago. :) You are the puffer expert! Yeah I have read they have tooth overgrowth issues... I haven't checked his teeth yet, he is pretty small and very active so it's a little hard to see them. I will try to see them today. I had never seen these ...

New modestus- different behavior?

I recently acquired an A modestus, about 1.5-2". I have kept GSPs, fig 8, dwarfs, and irrubesco but never one of these guys. He looks a little different... Body is a little narrower? But his behavior is a bit different. I haven't seen him rest on things and I haven't seen the tail-curling hunti...

Re: Young GSP's in full marine?

What size was it when you moved it into full marine? (since we're mainly looking for how this affects little guys put into full marine, instead of moving them only when they are larger) 1.5-2" Did the fish survive? yes How long was it/is it in full marine? 6 months or so until I sold him. How ...

Re: 65 gallon setup

Can I keep the aragonite sand or would regular gravel be better? What kind of substrate is in their natural habitat? Or could I just put the gravel on top of the sand? Will plants grow in aragonite sand? Ooo you know what might be cool, leaving the sand and the rocks in there and just switching the ...

65 gallon setup

I have a 10g with a pair of irrubescos and a 10g with a pair of DP's. I am converting my 65 sw to fw to house a school of puffers. Which would be cooler, like 20 DPs or 4 SAPs?

Re: Breeding C. irrubesco or C. travancoricus (sp?)

So far they both hide in the java fern all day, the female coming out ocassionally and the male only coming out at feeding. Here's a picture of the tank... http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j208/luvluvluvluvluv/tank2.jpg the aponegoton bulbs are sprouting in the back and will fill out soon, and I'm ...

Re: Breeding C. irrubesco or C. travancoricus (sp?)

I've decided I'll maintain the dwarf puffer tank but refrain from spending too much money on it until I have a job. I know red-eye puffers are from basins and rivers in like indonesia and stuff, and they like slightly acidic water. I was at the LFS and they were out of ph lowering stuff, and the onl...

Re: Breeding C. irrubesco or C. travancoricus (sp?)

The dwarfs have been moved to a seperate, bare 10 gallon. I don't know whether to keep them or return them. For the filter I moved some of the sponge from the old tank into the new tank. I will check parameters and do waterchanges if needed.

Breeding C. irrubesco or C. travancoricus (sp?)

I bought a pair (male, female) of irrubescos and I would like to breed them. They are in a 10 gallon tank, and hide a lot in the day. Because of their reputation as being more timid puffers, I bought a pair (male, female) of dwarfs, to make the tank more active and interesting. I will see how the sp...
