The water I add to my snail tank is actually week-old water from my main tank during my weekly maintainence routine. I've found that if you add some mulm to the snail tank, they produce a lot more eggs for some reason. I do to this whenever my snail population gets depleted maybe once every 2 months...

I have a 55g and 2 shoplights. I suck at the whole measuring and geometry thing. Oh yeah, and the whole building something substantial and study thing. Can you elaborate a little more on the whole sand thing? Do you mean your SAPs actively digging into the sand for the malays an having their teeth worn down that way?
