Re: What kind of puffer is this?
Not kidding, I don't think he has teeth. I put an even smaller snail in his tank this morning. Could not break the shell. You could tell it was pissing him off, he kept going at, but nope... Could his teeth have been damaged? If so, do they grow back? Any chance breeders (raising them for food) coul...

Re: What kind of puffer is this?
Regarding teeth, again, I am not sure he has any :-) I dropped a home-grown 1cm ramshorn in his tank. He tried quite a few times, but could not break the shell. I then fished it out and gave it to my Figure 8's, who demolished it in seconds. So far, he is eating frozen shrimp (no shell, no head/tail...

Re: What kind of puffer is this?
There is very little data online from hobbyists keeping this species over the long term. Probably because it is a food item, more often than a pet? Yeah, I would agree with this. The research is all about how to grow them for food, so... maybe people are sick of eating puffers in China :-) Another ...

Re: What kind of puffer is this?
So, I have been trying to do more research on this. Two opposing possibilities are emerging for water temp: 1. Takifugu obscurus is on a number of sites, including http://www.wetwebmedia.com/newpuffsneale.htm, classified as a sub-tropical species. Its generically closest relative is Takifugu rubripe...

Re: What kind of puffer is this?
Huh, as a result of the culinary aspects of this species, there are some research papers on how to raise them. This one shows an optimal pH of 7.6, 77F temp and 3 meals a day. Granted this is for fattening them up for meals, and is only over an 8 week period, but still interesting. With a lack of ot...

Re: What kind of puffer is this?
Ack! This is making me nervous! Haha. He’s already got a name, Io, so hate to lose him. I don’t Iike the ambiguity.
Not sure what is worse for a puffer, water that is too cold or too warm. And what would be signs if he didn’t like the temp.

Re: What kind of puffer is this?
Huh, this has T ocellatus at pretty standard temps http://www.tropical-fish-keeping.com/tag/saddleback-puffer#sthash.SwAgrLRi.dpbs I am conflicted on temp. how would you be able to tell if water was too warm or too cold for a puffer? He's at 74 now, and just ate for the first time, so I am taking th...

Re: What kind of puffer is this?
Thanks for the confirmation. I read your article on T ocellatus and you suggest that obscurus could be cared for the same way. T ocellatus requires cooler water 65-68, do you think that is true for obscurus? I can’t find any data to confirm that.

Re: What kind of puffer is this?
Yes, I saw that Corvus has some experience with this species. Would like to know more about care (temp, pH, salinity, etc). Have not tried to feed him yet, but he does not look like he has any teeth!

Re: What kind of puffer is this?
Oh, I think I figured it out! He is an Takifugu obscurus! His markings are like that of T ocellatus (saddleback), but he has no orange in him. I then found this site: http://www.tropical-fish-keeping.com/tag/saddleback-puffer#sthash.SwAgrLRi.dpbs "The Obscure puffer (Takifugu obscurus) looks si...

Re: What kind of puffer is this?
He doesn't have any spots like the T niphobles. These are the only photos I can find online that kind of look like him.

What kind of puffer is this?
I think it is a Takifugu Poecilonotus but not sure. LFS called it a Snowflake Fugu. Even if it is, there is little in the way of care for it or expected size. Anyone know? He's in QT at the moment and will be a singleton in a 55g. He's about 3" at the moment.

Skinny Figure 8's
Hey all, I am wondering if my puffers are skinnier than they should be. I have been keeping them for a year and thought they were fine since they eat like horses, are very active, and their poo is consistently black. I lost the smallest one (Marshmallow) about 6 months ago when I suddenly noticed ho...

Re: Snail Breeding Woes
Hi, yes I have read that and used that for some of my setups. Maybe I should just be more clear about my questions :-) If you are currently breeding snails.... 1. What food/nutrients are you feeding? How much in quantity? How often? 2. What size is your tank? 3. What substrate is in your tank? 4. Wh...
