Re: Basic equipment for switch from brackish to marine

It has bigger bubbles in the top collection chamber and the microbubbles below that. Overnight it has pulled some blackish green skimmate, so I think it's working now. I was fiddling with the water level setting yesterday so it would look similar to the ones I saw on YouTube. On the video they said ...

Re: Basic equipment for switch from brackish to marine

I bought an Ehopps PSK-75H skimmer second hand and installed it today. I downloaded the manual and watched some YouTube videos to figure out how to set it up. It seems to be working (though not skimming much yet), I hope it doesn't end up flooding my floor! I moved one of the freshwater HOB filters ...

Re: Basic equipment for switch from brackish to marine

Yup. I was looking for rock today and at the same time I looked up how to cure it. I found a couple of local reef supply shops that carry cured rock.

You need a protein skimmer, HOB is fine & 1 1/2-2lbs live rock/gallon. You must be sure the live rock is cured.
Thanks for the info! Do I need to add both to the tank at the same time or should I add the skimmer first?

Basic equipment for switch from brackish to marine

I've been doing a lot of research on equipment for a marine setup but the more I read, the more confused I become. I know a lot depends on what I'll be keeping in my tank. I don't want to go bankrupt buying equipment I don't need, so I need to know what I do need. I have one GSP in a 30 gal tank. He...

Re: Useful Info RE API test kits

I received the card a few weeks ago, and they also included the instruction booklet. For now since I'm only at 1.010 sg, I'm checking both cards when I test the water. So far there isn't a lot of difference.

Useful Info RE API test kits

Recently I emailed API because I wanted to know at what sg I should be switching from their Freshwater Master Test Kit to their Saltwater kit. I have a young GSP and I'm increasing the salt level as he grows bigger. They told me that the two kits are IDENTICAL. The only difference is the color chart...

Re: Best live feeders for GSP?

Just curious, why live? There’s lots of other options 🙂 Pretty much everything I've read about GSP's and most puffers states that they must have live invertebrates with shells so they can grind their teeth down. Apparently that's their natural food. I've already tried giving him thawed brine shrimp...

Best live feeders for GSP?

I'm searching for snails or live inverts to keep and breed as feeders for my 2 inch GSP. He's currently in his own cycled 30 gal tank, transitioning to brackish (now at .004, increasing slightly with each water change). Right now he mainly eats bottom feeder shrimp pellets, which he chews up while t...

Re: New to puffers- need some advice

I have a baby GSP as well. Even though I live in a big city, I'm having trouble sourcing live snails other than mystery snails, which I've managed to kill repeatedly. At first I tried feeding him (thawed) frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp, but he wasn't interested. However, he does eat bottom feeder...

Raising salt levels, changing products?

Right now I'm in the process of increasing the salt level for my GSP tank. The puffer is only 1.5 inches long so I'm only going up to about 1.005. Currently it's at 1.003. He's in a smaller tank while I cycle the big 35 gal tank for him. He was in a bigger tank, but that tank started leaking and I h...

Re: Thinking of doubling filtration...

Doubling filtration won't do any harm unless there's too much water flow pushing the fish around the tank. However, it's not done so you can perform fewer water changes. Double filtration is often used to compensate for species that create a lot of waste, as puffers do. It's true that a second filte...

Re: Battling nitrates and switching to brackish

If you indeed mean nitrAte & not nitrIte, below 20 is preferred but 40 won't harm them. I'm glad 40 won't harm them, I wasn't looking forward to a constant battle to keep nitrates down because they're in my tap water as well. And yes, I meant nitrAtes. The nitr*I*tes are at zero, so is the ammonia....

Re: Battling nitrates and switching to brackish

I'd return the mollies & continue doing WC daily. There's no reason your nitrate can't be the sane as your tap water. As my signature says: I can't return the mollies because they came from a private seller, but I do have another tank they can be moved to. Every day WC are no problem, I've got a Py...

Battling nitrates and switching to brackish

I'm not sure whether this thread should be in the freshwater section, but here goes. I recently acquired three F8's. I bought them from someone locally who refused to sell me just one. They also threw in four mollies. I have a pre-cycled 35 gallon freshwater tank, whose previous occupants were moved...
