Re: ammonia testing in brackish water....which colour chart?

If you have .25 nitrite then your cycle is incomplete... a completed cycled should read 0 amm. and 0 nitrite, + some nitrate. Should have waited for the cycle to be completed before introducing the puffer.
Keep up on large daily water changes so that nitrite doesn't harm the puff.

Re: carbon necessary for bw?

Carbon isn't really necessary for any aquarium. It's more of an optional thing to assist with the removal of odors and chemicals/medications.

Re: ammonia testing in brackish water....which colour chart?

I remember there was a thread started on this forum that was about how to read the ammonia level with low-end brackish water. I think the verdict was that the colour for zero amm. will be closest to the FW chart, but will be slightly muddied by a slight green-brown tinge as a result of salt content....

Re: Holes in Java Fern (F8)

Yeah definitely sounds like puffer bites. My previous Figure Eight would chomp little holes in my java fern too.

Re: New GSP day. Pics and questions.

Your images are not showing up on my end. Don't worry too much about nips etc, this is fairly common. As long as they aren't open red sores or anything they shouldn't be a problem. Just ensure you provide clean water and even dose with melafix to accelerate the healing.

Re: Moving to an apartment

Try get some clean buckets with lids, and use them to transport biomedia and your fish. Remember to completely drain the tank before you move it, else you risk cracking the glass. Best to have a large volume of replacement water prepared and ready at your new apartment.

Re: thinking of picking up a gsp but....

Definitely start up a marine tank from the start, as PP says. Will cut out so much stress and future hassle (when you eventually go marine anyway) for both you and the fish.

Re: Aragonite questions

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but RTR or someone else recommended that a small amount be replaced every two years or so. Don't be concerned with it too much. Yeah, definitely rinse it out (as with all aquarium substrates) they often contain a lot of fine dust and unwanted stuff that will cloud you...

Sorry for your loss :( I hope this doesn't dissuade you from keeping another puff in the future.

Re: Poisoned Tank

Although keeping the two puffers in FW sounds convenient to you, that sounds very unfair to the fish. What's the point in keeping fish (or any animal for the matter) when you can't provide them appropriate living conditions (?)
Hope for their sakes this is a temporary arrangement.

Re: Protecting Fingers

How big are the GSPs? If they aren't like 6 inches or something, and just wee guys I would just chase them with your hand if they become too feisty. Of course don't actually physically touch/harm them, just sort of bluff to show who's boss. I haven't really had any fish-person aggression from any of...

Re: Figure 8 not gaining weight

Would be a good idea to give at least two more follow-up doses in the next few weeks. Otherwise you may risk re-infection. Make sure to only do them after a large water change though.
