Re: Irrubesco - newbie questions

Welcome to the puffer addiction! These will easily be the greatest fish you have ever kept. They should love that tank you setup. I have a Borneo red-eye who used to hate everything but has calmed down the past 6 months. I believe the red-eye dwarfs are all sexually dimorphic so you can tell the dif...

Re: Finicky Palembang is driving me nuts!

How is he doing by the way? I rescued an emaciated picky palembang that would only eat live fish. It was tough, but now he eats everything, so keep trying. I'll agree as well that, even though it's hard for us keepers, fast for awhile (esp when healthy) and they WILL get hungry eventually. Also, try...

puffer bites?!

While I was netting out some dragon puffer poop yesterday my little guy tried nipping my finger. Only once, and then I think he realized he made a mistake. However, it was meal time, and he didn't eat yesterday, and he has only been going on every other day for a few weeks now. I got a little nervou...

Re: rescued a Palembang puffer!

You already mentioned his color changes are normal. However, he also seems to have his "hump" be more prominent at times as well. Going to guess this is normal too? Any reason why they would do this?

It has also been a month since I got him so his present was a ton of ghost shrimp. Happy hunting!

Re: DP newbie, tons of questions!

Congrats on the "new" tank! Dwarf puffers are great little fish by the way. Also a great starter puffer, and kind of a gate-way drug into the rest of them. They are typically easier to maintain due to their smaller size, no teeth issues, and temperaments. They will appreciate your heavily planted an...

Re: My Pea Puffer ATE a tiny white worm! Prazi her, pronto?!

Looks like a detritus worm. They're harmless. Actually quite normal in an established tank. You usually don't see them unless you stir something up or are over feeding.

I find it funny after my Pea puffer eats a ton of bloodworms and I find a red nugget in the front of the tank

Filtration setup for messy fish?

Wondering if any of you have a specific, or different, setup when keeping larger messier fish. Such as phosphate removers for algae, or anything to help with nitrates. I have a canister filter now for my larger puffer, which is great for customizing media. I mainly used Seachem Matrix, couple differ...

? for Palembang owners

So much different info online about these guys, esp when it comes to size. For anyone that's owned one, how big is yours? Or how big have you seen one? I just can imagine mine reaching 8", which would be a sight to see.

Re: rescued a Palembang puffer!

Needed an update. He's doing great and wanted to say hi *Also, I noticed he slightly changes colors, more darker and lighter at times. Is this normal, or a sign of anything? Nothing is constant, or has triggered this, as far as I now. Just sometimes his spots pop more, other times he's darker, somet...

puffer back hump?

After looking after many palembang, or humpback, puffer pictures I have noticed that some have very noticeable humps while others don't have much at all. Is this purely genetic, or is there more to it than that?

Re: rescued a Palembang puffer!

I forgot I had a FW surface skimmer, but after I plugged it in it seems like a lot of extra flow in my tank. Which I would normally like. This guy now has a sponge filter, canister filter with spray bar, and the skimmer moving water. Do you think it's too much? Btw, his eating is great. Had a couple...

Re: rescued a Palembang puffer!

I had to capture the crayfish today. Boy is he fast, too fast for the puffer. He was also declawed. He just kept hiding, for obvious reasons, and I didn't want him to go after my plants at this point. My puffer had no interest with him between my tongs. I think he was scared of its legs. So I gave h...

are pea puffers really that messy?

I will agree that puffers are sloppy eaters and love to leave a mess. Depending on the food, my two larger ones have a good share of it fly out of their gills. However, I have never seen this happen with my pea puffer, and with some similar food items. They also slurp snails up vs crushing them. I h...
