Re: Best filter for single Pea in 10g?
2 females is much better than I of each sex as a general rule But in this specific case, isn't it pretty difficult to sex them for a while? Would it be better to buy 3 to spread out aggression vs. just two, in the event both/all three were males? I don't know, because my last attempt with pea puffe...

Here's a few things to help with the noise of a HOB. 1) Get a good one, e.g. the Aquaclear as mentioned above. 2) Fill the tank as full as possible so you don't have the splashing noise. 3) Get a background to put on the back of the tank to hide the HOB - they're usually a few dollars. 4) Prime the ...

Re: can you recommend any cold water fish?
Cherry shrimp (and most neocaridinia species) are fine in room temperature or below. I kept mine on a window ledge getting direct sunlight and they bred even to December in Michigan, so relatively far north and probably 50 degrees F, and they were still doing great. Most species of crayfish are the ...

Re: Leaky CoralLife 36 Watt UV x2
I've read mixed reviews on Coralife products. Some people love them and others hate them, and it seems to be a mixed set of results on whether it works well or not. Unfortunately I don't have any alternatives to suggest. However, if the second is having similar issues, I'd vote returning it and tryi...

Re: black Friday $25 refractometer
If the pic is right, it's ATC brand. You can get on eBay for $30 just about any day, but if you have free ship from BRS, a nice find. That model will vary in accuracy from unit to unit - sometimes linearly, sometimes on a curve. I'd calibrate as close as possible to the point where you're testing (e...

Re: One sec he looks dead. The next he's fine!?
For starters, in my opinion and per the care info here and related places (http://www.thepufferforum.com/forum/ug.php/v/PufferPedia/Brackish/T_Nigroviridis/), 2 GSPs will rapidly need a 40 gallon 48x12x16 tank to avoid stunting and possibly even a 75 gallon 48x18x18 long-term depending on aggression...

Re: Argh! Advice/Planning for Moving??? (F8)
I wouldn't sweat it. Keep the filter media damp while moving and you'll be fine. Empty the tank. Put the Figure 8 in a container with 1/2 air, 1/2 water, and make the move to the new place. Fill the tank back up with water that is as close to the previous setup as possible (temp/salinity) and also ...

Re: Algae eater to go with a Valentini Toby?
Other things to consider to reduce brown algae would include running actinic lights mostly vs. white/10000K as the whiter light tends to encourage algae in a SW tank from my observations. Also does the tank get direct sunlight? Although that usually encourages more green-type algaes. Check your wate...

It's a flowerhorn, I believe. Not sure what variety. A freshwater hybrid between a bunch of large cichlids.

Re: Quick Filtration Question
+1 for Aquaclears. If the biowheel doesn't dry out, you should have enough bacteria on it even if you replace the carbon filter pad. But I cant' guarantee it. Honestly, I'd replace the filter pad with a sponge if you can find one to fit. Then you can just lightly rinse the sponge in tank water when ...

Re: any fish have a personality like a puffer?
For me, 'interesting fish' fall into a few categories. One is interesting because of 'curiosity'. This is where puffers are for me. Another is interesting because of mating behaviors. This is pretty much where my smaller cichlids like convicts fall - they are not curious about things but are fiercel...

Re: Tank Stalled - Puffers Come in on Wed! What do I do?
Good to hear, thank you. I actually had some media from a filter in the tank at work when I started this cycle, so it's a bummer that it ended up not working well for me in the end. Not sure where it went wrong. Either way, I'll pick up the Safestart tomorrow so I'm ready. Are you saying that I'll ...

Re: Tank Stalled - Puffers Come in on Wed! What do I do?
Thank you for the advice. Is Safestart okay to use then? I've heard a lot of talk about it causing crashes later down the line and that would be devastating to my puffers obviously. I'm already planning on doing ammonia and nitrite tests two times a day for the few few weeks that I've got the littl...
