Re: Tetraodon Schoutedeni
A guy just offered some up for sale in Korea from a Canadian supplier for 1 million KRW (about $900 dollars). if they were going for about half that I'd be a little tempted.

Re: Mangroves in Tank
I would not trust them with zoanthids, but had no problems with mushrooms, trees and all kinds of Sinularia including the green branched ones. so basically nothing soft and jelly-like? After thinking a few minutes on it, I do have some reservations about jumping into a full marine setup, given the ...

Re: Mangroves in Tank
Well, my mangrove was idea was primarily for looks, definitely not nutrient export. I am certain magroalgae will do a far better job but it won't look nearly as nice. To be honest with you, I much prefer corals to mangroves (and my wife also loves them) but I have read in many places that corals and...

Re: Inside-tank Feeding Container?
I have fed a skinny dp up in a seperate container, he got used to the breeding net quickly and would swim in by himself after a while. Unless absolutely necessary I would not put the fish through this stress though. What stress if they are going in it on their own though? Think of a puffer going in...

Inside-tank Feeding Container?
I'm sure a few of you have probably seen this video on YouTube entitled "Green Spotted Puffer - AKA: World's Messiest Eater" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJyCwscFyfs This video got me thinking that we could probably save some of the eating mess from spreading throughout our tanks and int...

Re: Mangroves in Tank
I would *love* to add corals but would you really consider them easier than mangroves? My understanding is that corals require far stronger lighting than any plant and are often turned into snacks by hungry puffers. Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Give a fish a man, and he'll eat for wee...

I know that this is pretty old thread, but the link to the guide in the original post is apparently dead. Is there another copy anywhere I can find?

Re: Mangroves in Tank
Humidity is something I've been concerned about, since most of a mangrove is exposed to air. Winters in Korea are very dry, not to mention the drying that occurs through use of AC in warmer months. Do you advise a particular system of humidifying be used for mangroves? On a separate note (not sure i...

Re: Mangroves in Tank
Thanks for the feedback guys. 15 cm from the top would equate to about 60 liters, dropping the maximum capacity of the tank down to 140 liters/37 gallons, not counting substrate, decorations etc. Not an ideal solution. At one shop I did find something that I think might work - basically a modular pl...

Re: Mangroves in Tank
My issue with this is that mangroves can only be partially submerged, which means you have to keep an open top. Puffers are very good jumpers... That's a good point. How high can GSPs jump? If I keep the water level a little low relative to the top of the tank, say 10 to 15 cm, would that be suffic...

Mangroves in Tank
It took a LOT of work but I finally got my wife to agree to letting me set up a 202 liter (~53 US gal) brackish/marine tank for a green spotted puffer. I found a few places here that also sell red mangrove seedlings and my plan is to try growing 6 to 7 of them directly in the tank with the puffer to...

Re: Digital pH Meter?
Finally replaced the batteries and got the thing working. I calibrated it using a pH 6.86 solution (it initially gave a reading of 6.75), then tested using a pH 4.00 solution. Everything seemed to work fine. Measured the pH of my tank using Tetra's Freshwater pH kit (1.004 sg) and the color seemed t...

I know this thread is a little old but, it didn't by chance look anything like the photos below, did it? I purchased some ghost shrimp from the store where those pictures are from and one of these guys got added as an accidental stowaway. It's actually a leech that specializes in killing snails, whi...

Re: Brackish water changes
Many will not agree with this method but I used to pour the salt into the impeller side of the HOB filter as the tank was filling with FW. it would mix in the filter. You could even pre-mix it in a jug of water 1st & pour it in the filter, which would disburse it through the tank. Of course, yo...
