Re: My New Little Guy
Cool little fish. I like the dark sand as well.

Re: Puffer compatible fish
It looks like you have a yellow color phase porcupine puffer. Mine was like that at that size, but has turned more tan and red as he grew. He's now 6-7 inches. It only took a year for him to grow that fast. I currently have a 180g and have in it a porcupine puffer, powder blue tang, sargassum trigge...

Re: puffed up porc
It doesn't happen very often, but when it does it is really cool to see.

Re: Porcupine puffer growth rates
He's in a 180g right now with a fairly open aquascape, but that's not to say he may go in something bigger in the future.

Porcupine puffer growth rates
Just curious what the normal growth rate is for these puffers? I've had mine for a year and when I got him he was about 3 inches. He is now 6-7 inches and has doubled in size. I feed him 1-2 times daily and he is in a 180g. I bought him as a yellow puffer from DD and now he is more tan/red in color....

Re: shells for Porcupine puffer?
Mine is a picky eater and will not touch shelled food unless I mix it in with some rods reef. He trims his teeth on the live rock. I've watched him do this and have seen some of the aftermath as well (i.e. tiny chunks of live rock on the sandbed).

Re: Water Change question
I do a 20-25% weekly water change on the display and do a 60% weekly on QT if fish are in there since the filtration isn't as good as the display tank. If the display is fallow, then I would do less of a water change.

I saw porky puff up.
It was just about feeding time and I was bringing the food when I saw him fully puffed up (close to the size of a baseball). Nothing seemed to provoke him. He just did it on his own. I've heard from a lot of people that every once in a while they practice. It was quite a sight. The display did not l...

How many different color phases for a porcupine puffer?
I have seen on various sites blue, red, yellow and also some gray or tan color variations of the porcupine puffer Diodon Holocanthus. I was just wondering how many color phases there were and if they are indigenous to certain areas of the ocean? My yellow when I first got him was yellow with light b...

Re: Getting puffer to try new foods
Thanks Pufferpunk. He seems to be liking garlic soaked foods. I feed him with feeding tweezers (plastic zoomed brand) and he goes for it.

Re: Porcupine Research
Welcome to the site. :) I'm pretty new here myself, but from what I have noticed with my porcupine, they are fairly hardy fish and not too difficult. As far as tank size, I could not view the link. I have mine in a 180g (681 Litre 183 cm x 61 cm x 61 cm). They love to explore and don't seem to mind ...

Re: Getting puffer to try new foods
Thanks Flutter! I don't normally try to hand feed. I have tried it a few times and he is the only fish that will come close enough to grab the food. I usually drop the food in front of the powerheads so that the food gets blown through the water and he likes to hunt it that way. When I did that with...

Getting puffer to try new foods
Hi, I have a juvenile porcupine puffer that eats fine, but does not like to go for shelled foods. He will eat mysis, krill, and rods reef, but will not eat clams, cockel, mussel or other shelled foods. I do use vita-chem, vitamin C and selcon since he is a picky eater, but at least he is eating. Do ...
