Re: completely new to puffers

For a 20 gallon, you should go brackish instead of fresh. Only dwarf/pea puffers are true freshwater. So that being said, get a figure 8 puff. They are big enough to see well, but small enough to live in a 20 gallon and they are easy to find at pet stores. You should really only get 1 for that size ...

Re: puffer and foxface

I had a very sad day yesterday.... My Porky Puffer of 3+ years died. Cause of death? They were both happily eating some food when my Foxface took a bite and then pulled back, just barely clipping my puff with his spines. Problem was, it was very near puff's gills. He immediately started twitching an...

Re: Pufferfish Lockjaw - Cured

Dont have a picture handy, but here's what i used... A 5+ml syringe (it came with some Aiptasia-X for use as an applicator). I removed the metal pointy part at the end, there is a plastic coupling underneath it. (just an FYI, insulin syringe's are WAY too small, so dont try them). I shoved a 6"...

Re: Do GSP's really do better in Marine?

Hmm, once a large adult GSP has been acclimated to full marine salinity, can they remain there forever?
Also, is it possible to promote breeding if you swap them into a freshwater tank (via drip acclimation?)

I have yet to own a GSP, but it's only a matter of time. :D

Re: Pufferfish Lockjaw - Cured

People who think of fish as disposable pets need to not have fish as pets. Especially Puffers.
Tell them to get a fish screen-saver or a plushie or something instead.

Re: For those who can not find Finquel

MS-222, Finquel, Tricane-S is only available to Vet's in the UK, and they have to be the one's to administer it to the fish, so I dont think you'll have much luck getting a take-home supply. Look for Koi sedatives like Kusuri Masuizai Koi Sedate, for legal reasons they are marked as sedatives, but t...

Re: Pufferfish Lockjaw - Cured

Ack, when the alternative is letting your poor puff die, I think force feeding is a reasonable option.

Re: Pufferfish Lockjaw - Cured

Yar, I just read her posts. I wish more people would post the results...
So many people come to forums with a problem and are looking for a solution, then they never seem to post the results.
Thats another reason I wanted to get this information out there.

Re: DP 10 gallon

I've kept 3 dwarf puffers in a 10 gallon. They get along fine with the otto I had in there (although Otto's as a rule do better in groups). The key is not putting more than 1 male in the tank. 2 or more males in a tank that size will fight, usually to the death. I had 1 male & 2 females. This ca...

Try also searching for Tricane-S & MS-222.
I got mine from a pond supply store.

Re: Porcupine puffer?

Oya, I guess I failed to mention a major factor. The turnover rate in the tank is massive, I have 4 x 900 gph powerheads (seio's) + the return pump/overflow. I've also maguivered a few things like the skimmer etc to work a lot more efficiently, and I built a small wave machine for the bottom tank. I...

Re: Porcupine puffer?

It's a heavy bioload to be sure. I had built a turf-algae filter and was running that for a while, but that was causing algae blooms, which have never been a problem before. So I scrapped it. My nitrates are not a problem as long as I water change every 3-4 weeks. I run DSB's in both top and bottom ...

Thanks, I have been trying to get this information out there, as my Puff is my best buddy and I dont want other Puff's to suffer needlessly.

Re: Porcupine puffer?

Oya, just wanted to point out: The reccomended tank size listed for fish is sometimes rated on physical size (like for tangs, who need swimming room) and sometimes for bioload size (like for puffers/eels) and sometimes for physical space (the fish just gets so big it needs room enough to move). If y...

Re: Porcupine puffer?

Cowfish need at least 180 gallons when fully grown. Some boxfish/turretfish stay small and can hang in 60 gallons or so, but they all run the risk of wiping out the tank with toxins if they ever get pissed off or attacked/harassed. I dont think I would ever mix a cow/box/turret fish of any kind with...
