Re: Pao Abei / Tetraodon cochinchinensis / possible turgidus

I have a T cochinchinesis and its personality has really bloomed over time, but initially it would just hide as much as it possibly could [in a planted aquarium]. Now it likes to chill in the corner nearest me and beg for food, as well as swim around, hide under a big leaf, etc. And none of the craz...

Re: Red eye species identification help please

Cool you are totally right, though I guess that genus got lumped in with "Pao" too. http://www.fishbase.org/summary/60212 "Greenish back with black spots, not well demarcated from belly; belly greyish to dark brown, with or without dark markings; adults with ocellus, sometimes red, bu...

Re: Red eye species identification help please

Thank you. Definitely helpful, will do.
Tetraodon leiurus definitely has as many pictures that look like my fish though?
When they get bigger, the really cool target spot turns solid black?

Re: Red eye species identification help please

Finding some stuff from searching. Not in the Carinotetraodon family as I had assumed, dangit. Is a Tetraodon. Several closely-related species. From 2007 post by Corvus, this may be leiurus, abei, cochinchinensis, barbatus, turgidus... What do you all think? Unfortunately more lurking behavior and l...

Red eye species identification help please

Hi all, I recently bought two red eye puffers from a LFS in IL (that doesn't really seem to do a great job w their livestock health); one appeared on death's door with ich but did move well when startled, other one with mild ich. I quarantined in a 15gal tub with backup filter that was cycled runnin...

Re: Anyone Seen a Ceylon Puffer Like This?

I've turned the lights on in the middle of the night and my Fig 8 would be darker and more uniformly-colored, I assume part of a stealth mode.

I just wanted to chime in that this is absolutely amazing (w/ the before and after pics)... just such visual evidence to point people to.

Ah, that's not good news. I'll update the thread if something happens so we can learn from this.

Re: T. ocellatus - tail turning red?

Yeah, nice links Corvus. I took some pictures, but the red is subtle and the pictures make it appear like I'm making this all up. I guess the bottom line is, tho, that you guys have reassured me that there isn't some commonly known pathology that starts out with a little bit of redness in the fins. ...

T. ocellatus - tail turning red?

I have a perfectly happy (as far as I know) Takifugu ocellatus in a 55 in full marine (I've had it for about a year), but over the past month(s) its tail has gotten a bit of 'red' to it. As the pictures online are mostly juvies, I didn't know if this is normal or not. So I guess, does anyone know of...

Re: milk-spotted puffer

I had bought a pair of them back in the day and ended up giving them away a few months later after deciding I wasn't at a point in my life where I could have a 100g+ tank. They got along well, but were still very juvenile (so who knows if they wouldn't have got along when they got bigger) and I had ...

Yeah as far as my logic works, there is no such thing as "overfiltration," but there is such a thing as too much current.

Re: new home for the fugu (finally)

On a whim, I went with a new substrate "Reef Base," http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=19639 Each sphere is smaller than I expected, and these spheres do really seem like they'd feel cozy to the puffer. Also, as it is less dense than sand/etc, 44lbs of it fills ...

Re: new home for the fugu (finally)

Is live rock assumed to have comparable anaerobe-hosting ability w/ or w/o lighting? I guess that makes sense (the same places that lack exposure to oxygen also lack exposure to light)..? I'm not sure why the idea of live rock w/o good lighting sounds so weird to me. I'm probably going to have to No...
