Ok, I'm probably being paranoid here, but again I'm still learning :): I'm at work and my wife calls to tell me that the tank is no nearly covered in the brown algae. I understand it will go away on its own, but how long should I wait? Is it good to try and scrape it away or do I have to let it take...

on the fish I don't know... as for the hermits.. yes you will need extra shells. I breed assassin snails and they take those shells. MTS or other cone shells are great. If you have other snails the hermits may kill the snails for their shells. Just an FYI. Blue legged hermits remain small so assass...

if there are no puffers in the tank and no corals (FOWLR) go all out! 1 have 5 blue legged hermits in a 5 gal and they are great. Any advice on how the powerheads should be positioned? I have them pointing at an angle (I think you can tell from the pictures) so that they do hit the live rock.

I did not. I can tell you though that it filled up four 5 gallon home depot buckets.

It has a protein skimmer too, which is up and running. The previous owner kept the filter working too but i remember reading that i shouldn't need one.

What's scary about the filter? Post a pic. It is a canister filter. Pic is the very last one. Thanks! It is live sand and looks like rock in it too. Everything you see came with it.
Right now I have it all up except the filter as it scares me LOL.
