Re: Euthanasia techniques article

I don't know about aquarium fish, but I've thought about ways to kill wild caught fish. Nothing seems to work faster than stabbing through the brain with a knife. It's not pretty, but all signs of life stop instantly without suffocation, freezing or sickening poisons. Some people club them or try to...

Re: need a lot of snails

I breed petco's "pest" snails. I think they're tadpole snails, not sure. They do better in planted tanks, they're always breeding. You should have eggs in 10 days or less, but it'll take about two weeks before those are breeding. Once I tried keeping a few large ones as breeders (they don'...

Re: When Wild Puffers Attack - Ouch !

if I have to stick my hand in Rancor's tank, I tend to stick my whole forearm in. He won't attack something bigger than him, but a few fingers are an invading force he will attack.

Re: I've never seen a GSP inflate

Mine's puffed up twice, but it's hard to get a picture since ignoring him (while sitting by his snail tank) seems to be what sets him off.

Wasn't sure about the spikes the first time, but I was totally sober the second time, they only stuck out for an instant.

Re: Ghost Shrimp Eggs?

Only had four actually live, but I tend to keep Rancor's feeder shrimp till their eggs hatch. Back then his snail tank had an Amazon Sword taking up most of the 8 gallons.

If I did that I wouldn't have a 40 gallon tank for just one fish.

Re: Overfeeding Puffers

I have a GSP that will overeat, it gets stressed for a while then it poops, it's about two inches and eats a slice of shrimp a bit smaller than a tylenol once a day...although it ate a hermit crab the other week and was just fine. I think they have to eat a LOT to actually do damage to themselves bu...

I hadn't thought of it before, but a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) might be a good idea.

Re: Have we helped you help your puffer?

I wish I could help out, back when I worked at Walmart I refered people to this site for care info every time I typed in a code for a GSP on the register. The guy caring for the fish didn't have a clue (Chinese Algae Eaters with Violet Gobies, the humanity) but as it stands I'll be lucky if I have a...

Re: Overfeeding Puffers

I think you're supposed to feed them every day till they're about four inches, then every other day. I've been feeding mine daily, but only a slice of shrimp the size of half a tylenol and few snails here and there, it's about 2 3/4 inches...funny thing is when I get the shrimp to the cutting board ...

Re: Planted Tank

I tried bulbs once, a lot of those are DOA. Just to be on the safe side I don't buy anything unless it's got a little green showing...and I'm not buying anything from that LFS again unless I intend on spending another night identifying the new lifeforms (benign yay!) that come with bulbs sometimes.....

Re: A few general questions about snail tanks.

I have a 9 gallon hex growing snails right now, it's not even filtered, just a heater and a bubbler with a desk plant lamp clamped on the top. I got an Amazon Sword growing in it and it seems to be doing fine. I keep the water level low, actually about 7 gallons. Occasionally, I dump the sludge from...

It'd be cool to see a list of names by species compiled out of all of this.

To heck with the lighting, have you found a plant that can survive a GSP?

Re: Enough decor?

I got some really nice stones from up near the Ft. Knox mine, scrubbed them clean, baked them at 400F for an hour, left them in the oven overnight, then built up my 40 gallon till it's more of a 36 gallon. These little buggers are kinda smart (for fish) and it helps to keep changing arrangements in ...
