Re: New here, soon to be puffer owner again.
Unfortunately, he didn't make it through the night. I assume it was a case of combined stress, malnutrition, and possibly sickness. Water params are great. Ammonia - 0, Nitrite - 0, Nitrate 5, temp - 80F, pH 8.0. I'll have to look somewhere else to get some from next time. BTW, these weren't from th...

Re: New here, soon to be puffer owner again.
Poor lil skinny fellow! Does he have ich too? No, I don't believe he does. Granted, it kind of looks like it in that photo, but that was taken with the flash which reflected a bunch of particles in the water. I don't see any spots on him at all. I'm going to keep a close eye on him for the next few...

Re: New here, soon to be puffer owner again.
So, I ended up ordering a couple Dwarf Puffers from an online retailer. One arrived alive, the other DOA. A bit sad, but those are the dangers of shipping.
Anyway, here's my survivor. His name is Gimli.

Thanks, me too. But kudos for her for being open and honest and caring about her customers. It's been frustrating. But it would be more so to get them only to have them die a few days later.sevenyearnight wrote:Awww... I'm sorry to hear the puffers fell so ill.

Re: Quick fishless cycling question
+1 to what I.Puff.Too said. Yeah, once you the nitrites stop registering, continue adding ammonia until you're ready to add fish. And keep testing to make sure everything is still the way it is supposed to be. Then, just before you add your fish, do your 50% water change. And keep testing for a week...

Re: Quick fishless cycling question
Oh, ok. I just finished a 5 gallon myself. I started with 2 drops per day, then when my nitrites registered, I dropped it to 1 drop per day. In your case, with your bacteria colony grown for 1 drop per day, then yeah, I would drop to every other day. Or you could continue doing 1 drop a day, it migh...

What size tank, and how much have you been dosing?

Re: Quick fishless cycling question
What I do once my nitrites start registering is cut my ammonia dosing in half. I've also, in the past, dosed the same amount of ammonia, but only every OTHER day instead of every day. The both work. I now just cut the dose in half because it's easier to remember to dose every day than trying to reme...

Re: New here, soon to be puffer owner again.
Well, it looks like it's a no go on the Dwarf Puffers for now. The problems the person I was going to get them from have taken their toll on her DPs. She only has 5 left. Looks like the stress from shipping to her, and the ich outbreak was just too much. She doesn't want to take the chance of sellin...

Re: New here, soon to be puffer owner again.
So, just got home from work, thought I'd share an updated tank shot even. Like I stated above, I removed the rocks from underneath the driftwood on the left, and moved the skull in their place, moved the cholla cactus wood around a bit, added a couple of patches of flame moss and fissidens fontanus....

Re: New here, soon to be puffer owner again.
that tank looks awesome! when you get your DP's keep an eye on the algae eaters, i had a friend who got some a few months into owning his tank and any fish he put in after them, the ottos would shoo away and one even would seem to latch onto a fish for a second that would come near it. his is the o...

Re: New here, soon to be puffer owner again.
So, while I'm waiting to get some puffers for my tank, I've had a bit of a diatom bloom. The tank finished the fishless cycle 2 or 3 weeks ago. Of course, I've continued adding ammonia every day to keep it that way. I was at PetSmart today to pick up a new litter box for the cats and as always went ...

Re: Favorite Puffer
Since I've never kept a tank bigger than 20 gallons, and I'm just a fan of nano fish in general, the Dwarf Puffer is by far my favorite. Not that I wouldn't get a bigger tank and try some of the other species, but I just love the tiny little guys.

Re: New here, soon to be puffer owner again.
Not as frustrating as treating ich! :/ Oh, I know. Like I said, I love the fact that she wants to make sure it's all cured and taken care of, and doesn't just send out possibly sick fish. your seller got any other puffers? Or can you hook me up with them The only puffers she sells are DPs. She deal...

Re: New here, soon to be puffer owner again.
::sigh:: Looks like it'll be one more week, at the least, probably more like 2 or 3, before I get my DPs. The person I plan on ordering from had an Ich outbreak in her DP holding tank. She's already treated with the raising the temp and salt method, but is now playing the wait and see game. I love t...
