Re: Cleaning/Disinfecting Question
If you boiled, it's probably fine then. Trying to save you that trouble. Cool, thanks. Beyond the gravel is oxy clean good to use on other equipment? I've always done the 20:1 bleach solution then soaked it in a bucket overdosed with Prime. But if Oxyclean is safer maybe I'll start going that route.

Re: Cleaning/Disinfecting Question
Thanks for the info. I boiled, rinsed, rinsed some more. It's not going in that soon so I think I'll grab some oxyclean.

Cleaning/Disinfecting Question
I'm slowly trying to rescape my tank and was going to put in some additional gravel. I have a bucket of gravel from a previous tank that has been outside for a loooong time. It has dirt and junk and probably a bit of algae and I'm sure some other things mixed in. I was planning to rinse it and then ...

Re: Black algae? What to do...
Perhaps you could add an easy to maintain, fast growing plant, liked water sprite, maybe it might use up some of that phosphate? Could be on to something. Back when I had Water sprite I never had an algae problem. Who knows. RTR, I can find out if the water company adds anyting. Maybe I'm misunders...

Re: Black algae? What to do...
Do you have a GH test kit? it might help diagnose the issue. Yes, just didn't think to test last night. Are commercial buffers being used? - if commercial buffers are in use, discontinue immediately and throw them away. Do 2-3 50% partials to purge them out. - I ask that as your KH is quite low, bu...

Re: Black algae? What to do...
Hit submit too quick...... now I just need to figure out if it's the black brush or the blue green since both have different courses of action to help get rid of it.

Re: Black algae? What to do...
Ok, if it's needed i did a few tests after picking up a new nitrate test.
Nitrates ~ 5 ppm
Phosphates ~ .5 ppm
Ph 7.2
kh ~ 3dKH
Not sure if the last two help diagnose the issue but I did them anyway

Re: Java Fern Question
It's a terrible pic from my phone RTR but I'm pretty sure it's java fern. At least I've been treating it as such for a few years.RTR wrote:Java fern has no roots, it has holdfasts only. Those long threads appear to be roots to me.

Re: Newbie Here
Have to admit I don't. Community tank with some tetras and a lonely Bolivian Ram. I'm hoping to change that when I get everything back to where it should be.Pufferpunk wrote: Got puffs?
