Re: F8 is always skinny

Sadly he passed away overnight.... Since I did initially treat him for parasites when we first got it, I can only assume that the initial treatment did not clear out all of the parasites, ultimately leading to his demise? He went downhill incredibly rapidly from Wednesday to Thursday, and even thoug...

F8 is always skinny

I have had a Figure 8 puffer for about 6 months now, he (or she) is typically very active, a voracious eater, but no matter how much it eats it goes back to looking really skinny. I feed him snails, shrimp pellets, frozen blood worms, frozen brine shrimp and am working on breeding ghost shrimp to fe...

Re: Going to try an F8 again

No water softener, just a sure fire way to see how inaccurate a swing arm hydrometer can be. Water with the hydrometer 1.004, water with a refractometer 1.000. I might try to position the pump somewhere that the flow gets deflected instead of going straight across the tank. If that won't work then I...

Re: Going to try an F8 again

Quick question, how much water movement do these guys like? I have a Koralia Nano which is rated at 240gph, trying to decide whether to use it or not. If they like to have a good bit of water movement, then I will switch it on, but if it will be too much I don't want to be blasting him all over the ...

Re: Going to try an F8 again

Well, picked one up. I did get aragonite sand, I like the look of it and hopefully the puffer will as well. The water at the LFS was 1.004 so I made sure mine matched. Crazy think is my tap water reads 1.004 out the tap with a hydrometer that I had. I did not trust that at all, so picked up a refrac...

Going to try an F8 again

About 5 years ago I had an F8 puffer for a few months, cured him of ich, got him looking healthy, then out of nowhere he died. To this day he has been one of my favorite fish, so I thinking about giving it another try. I have a 20G long that will be just for him/her but have a couple questions on su...

He died :(

Sad to say my F8 passed away yesterday. I am not really sure why, I looked in on him in the morning and he was his usual swim along the top of the tank begging for food self, got home in the evening and was preparing to feed him when I noticed something odd. Found him dead behind a piece of wood in ...

Re: My new Figure 8

My wife asked me something similar about hand feeding when I told her, to be honest I don't know how much of the actual food he got as I was very aware of him possibly biting my fingers. It was more of a curiousity thing on my part to see if he would, as my angelfish regularly will take food from my...

Re: My new Figure 8

You need to soak his foods in IP meds for at least 3 days of feedings. OK, will give him another 2 dosages. Re: My new Figure 8

A bit of a busy weekend for the little guy... fed him some brine shrimp soaked in Jungle parasite clear, he ate a good amount (indicated by his fat stomach) so I am fairly certain he took in a decent amount of the medicine. Also switched out his substrate to aragonite sand, he was NOT happy at me me...

Re: My new Figure 8

So, as it turns out I have both Jungle tabs and some Fenbendazole (liquid) already on hand, what kind of foods are best to soak in these? If using the tabs, should I dissolve them first in a little water, ten let the food sit in the water for a short time, then feed? Would something like bloodworms ...

Re: My new Figure 8

JRC3]Looking good. His ich is clearing and he looks nourished and heathy. Treat for IPs just in case. Thanks, what do you recommend using to treat for IP's as a precaution? Next thing for me is to go and re-read the feeding puffers article, seems like it should be fairly easy to get him a varied di...

Re: My new Figure 8

Will do, right now he is going a bit crazy, but I think that is due to the fact its his first meal since he gorged himself on snails at the weekend. Just also got done with another 50% water change today. This fish is fascinating, I am slowly trying to figure out what decor to keep in his tank, and ...

Re: My new Figure 8

Thanks RTR.

Quick update, the puffer is doing well. It looks like the ich is clearing up, I did a 50% water change yesterday and will be doing another tomorrow. He is still super active, curious and eating readily.
