I talked to someone about this. Fluval Stratum is lighter than sand, so my fish will eventually toss it all around the tank, and it will sit above the sand. It will also fall apart, causing clouds. They suggested I use it inside the canister filter as a filter medium, in a nylon sock.

I wouldn't mind lower PH, but I doubt I have enough of this substrate to make any difference.

I added a bullnose/rubbernose pleco, and bumped the light from 10 to 12 hours per day. I do not have algae issues, so I'm comfortable bumping the light considering how many algae eaters I have (13).

That PVC pipe has snail eggs inside it. So I'm leaving it until they hatch.

I'm getting algae on the glass, but that's easy enough to remove. The plants are growing well too.

For the moment I do not have enough adults, so I feed them well without harvesting much. I need more adults to lay more eggs. Perhaps later I'll have glass full of baby snails.
