Re: How long before it's an emergency?

Ya, my GSP had the "sadness" you mentioned in your fahaka, PP. I kept checking him with a flashlight but it made him beg me to stay with him and I wanted him to stay calm. One of my DP's fell asleep vertically stuck against part of the intake tube of her filter while it was off. I think th...

Re: Grocery Store visit.

++1 to live earthworms. Feed him one without meds to see if he'll even eat it,then when you've "baited" him (heh) feed him a worm soaked in meds.

Re: is hydrometer correct?

What kind of hydrometer is it? Mine floats in the water like a thermometer and is read by seeing how far it sinks along a gauge. Some must be calibrated.

Check it against a reading of an established tank?

How long before it's an emergency?

We recently suffered a brief power outage due to wind (about 4-5 hours). We knew roughly when the power would be back, so I decided to just let the fishes chill instead of evacuating them, and they were fine. When the power goes out, how long do we aquarists have before the dissolved oxygen crashes ...

Re: New dps

Hey,
My DP tank has a half sand/gravel combo:

I shape the gravel along the back, giving them some terrain on each end.

Then add sand (I use a soup ladle) into the "lagoon" area in front of the gravel. Looks great this way!

Re: GSP having trouble eatting

Hey, Sounds like a pretty nice tank. I'd try live earthworms especially, and clams or market snow crab, etc. You might be on to something with the beak suspicions. Once they've got overgrown "teeth" they need to be clipped. I know they (or at least the biggest saltwater puffs) have back, &...

Gosh--it would be easy to run a Python over the edge of a boat for WC's, too!

Re: Labored Breathing

signnet, you're doing really great! We all just want your puff to pull through. I'm pretty sure xray just meant that pet store worker didn't know what he was talking about, which is a tragically common occurrence in this hobby. Not your fault!

Peace,
Ally

Re: Labored Breathing

Hey, If your readings for ammonia or nitrite are above zero, do a partial water change with the mixed solution from your powerhead bucket as you've gotten the hang of, until those levels are 0. If you add Epsom salt at that ratio (1T/5G), and you take out five gallons later, just add another tablesp...

Re: Misgurnus Escapades!

Update: Peaches and her friends ate heartily again this eve (always a good sign). The others were really interested in sucking on Peaches' skin upon reintroduction, I'm guessing b/c she smell/tasted like... hair, dust bunnies, and musty, dirty cement?  Tank params still legit, in case...

Misgurnus Escapades!

I was feeding my weather loaches (who live in a tank in the basement of our house, where they stay chillier), so of course had the lid lifted when I lowered my eyedropper into the tank and my oldest/favored Misgurnus (Peaches) took offense to my gesture and FLEW out of the top of the tank and over t...

Re: Fire newt ?'s

I'm so sorry xray, I know you were trying hard for the little guy. When we first got fire bellies, they (2) eventually squeezed between the plane of glass (all-glass top) and the side of aquarium. We found one, but it died later, I'm assuming like FrogSpawn's of "rugburn". It never recover...
