background-color: transparent; color: windowtext; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px\" class=\"Paragraph SCX170765029\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">Unlike the Asian Gl<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">ass Catfish, this fish is not nearly<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\"> all transparent, but is silvery with black stripes<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">, with some<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\"> transparency especially along the belly<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">, back and side<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\"> muscles of the fish<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">.\u00a0 Like the Asian fish called by a similar name, it is strongly diurnal (day-active) and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">very <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">strongly<br \/>\nschooling with its own kind.\u00a0 Also like the Asian fish, it has suffered<br \/>\nmajor name confusion and error.\u00a0 The real name (at least at the moment)<br \/>\nis <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">Pareutropius<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">buffei<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">\u202f.\u00a0 It has been called for years in the trade either <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">Pareutropius<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">debauwi<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">or<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">Eutropiellus <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">debauwi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">is <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">commonly labeled \u201cDebauwi\u201d catfish for sale.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">true <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">fish of that name is a near relative, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">larger than this fish, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX170765029\">and rarely imported.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"EOP SCX170765029\"><br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0px; text-indent: 0px\" class=\"OutlineElement Ltr SCX237162956\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; vertical-align: baseline; font-size: 8pt; font-family: 'Segoe UI',Tahoma,Verdana,'Sans-Serif'; background-color: transparent; color: windowtext; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; width: auto; height: auto; margin-right: 25px\" class=\"Paragraph SCX237162956\"><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">But<br \/>\nthe fish sold under that name is one of the best catfish for tropical<br \/>\ntanks.\u00a0 It is also one of the most \u201cnormal\u201d catfish, as the \u201cCatfish of<br \/>\nthe Month\u201d entry on Planet Catfish<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\"> (2<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\"> points out.\u00a0 It is \u201cnormal\u201d in that it is shaped like a standard fish<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\"><br \/>\n(say a bit like a Rasbora, and quite unlike so many oddball catfish.<br \/>\nIt is normal in being day-active.\u00a0 It is strongly schooling with its own<br \/>\nkind, also norm<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">al for many hobby tank tropical fishes<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">.\u00a0 It has no strange or special requirements on foods, taking most prepared flakes and pellets, along with many<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\"> frozen\/thawed\/rinsed foods and\/<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">or<br \/>\ntheir live counterparts.\u00a0 It has no issues with other fish, tending to<br \/>\nignore their existence.\u00a0 It is not at all a bashful feeder either \u2013<br \/>\nwhich may short-change any bashful fish co-housed with these cats.\u00a0 It<br \/>\nmakes a rather oddball catfish just because it is such a normal fish.<br \/>\nIt never hides in wood or rock piles or hangs onto the glass.\u00a0 It swims,<br \/>\nand swims, and swims.\u00a0 Have I mentioned that it is very graceful and<br \/>\nalmost constantly active without being in a great hurry<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">, except at feeding times<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"EOP SCX237162956\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0px; text-indent: 0px\" class=\"OutlineElement Ltr SCX237162956\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; vertical-align: baseline; font-size: 8pt; font-family: 'Segoe UI',Tahoma,Verdana,'Sans-Serif'; background-color: transparent; color: windowtext; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px\" class=\"Paragraph SCX237162956\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; background-color: transparent; color: windowtext; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px\" class=\"Paragraph SCX237162956\"><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">If these catfish have any flaw, it is that they are not showy in color.<br \/>\nSilver and black is not something that sends hobbyists running for the<br \/>\nstore gripping their charge cards.\u00a0 But they are peaceful, trouble-free,<br \/>\nnon-aggressive, constantly active but only hyper at feeding time.\u00a0 In<br \/>\nshort they are hardy, peaceful but not cowardly schooling fish with no<br \/>\nquirks.\u00a0 If they have any quirk, it is that they among the most normal<br \/>\ntank fish available and definitely one of the very <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">best schooling fish in captivity<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">\u00a0 As I like schooling fish, <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">so <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">I<br \/>\nam a sucker for these and have not been without them in decades.\u00a0 If I<br \/>\nneed to relax and calm down, a cup of coffee or a few chocolates or both<br \/>\nwhile sitting in front of the <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">debauwi<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\"> tank will fix me up <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">just <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">fine.<br \/>\nIf I am completely frazzled, I might substitute a single-malt.\u00a0 This is<br \/>\nmy \u201chome\u201d or baseline tank.\u00a0 It is not exciting, but it is never<br \/>\nstatic.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"EOP SCX237162956\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0px; text-indent: 0px\" class=\"OutlineElement Ltr SCX237162956\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; vertical-align: baseline; font-size: 8pt; font-family: 'Segoe UI',Tahoma,Verdana,'Sans-Serif'; background-color: transparent; color: windowtext; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px\" class=\"Paragraph SCX237162956\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">, but they are not easily seen as they are shortish and fine, gene<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">rally <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">folded<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\"> along the head\/body.\u00a0 Sometimes <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">the one<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\"> slightly longer pair can be seen if you have sharp eyes<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">. Larger schools are of course<br \/>\nbetter.<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">\u00a0 If you think that Tetras are decent schoolers, wait until you keep diurnal catfish.<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">These fish really define schooling fish in captivity<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\"> for me<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">The standard length (nose to caudal peduncle) is just over three inches<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\"> (~ 3.2\u201d)<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">, so even in size these are \u201cnormal\u201d hobby fish.<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">\u00a0 The Asian gl<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">ass catfish is just about the same<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\"> at ~3.1\u201d standard length, but much lighter in total mass and thus in bioload<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\"> than these African Glass Catfish<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"TextRun SCX237162956\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial,Sans-Serif\" class=\"EOP SCX237162956\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0px; text-indent: 0px\" class=\"OutlineElement Ltr SCX237162956\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; vertical-align: baseline; font-size: 8pt; font-family: 'Segoe UI',Tahoma,Verdana,'Sans-Serif';
