porcupine puff and dogface

Post by hondatek »

hello my name is mike and im new to this site. I am curious if anyone has tried the porc and dogface together in the same tank.i would like to have both once i am done dealing with my ick ordeal that is almost over. I have had my buddy porc chop for almost a year now and he has done well with really small tankmates but i rehomed most of because i couldnt go fallow with all the fish i had.Anyways my tank is a 180 gallon with 55 gallon sump tank. a reef octopus 2500 diablo skimmer and a 18 by 12 inch turf scrubber.my current stock is porc chop about 5 inches , zebra lion about 3 inches and a two inch emperor angel .so what does everyone think? is my tank big enough for all those guys? Can anyone give me first hand experiences with them together? thanks

Two species of puffers isn't suggested. Most of the same species can't even stay together. If you want to keep both of these puffers you will need two separate tanks.

I kept a dogface and a porcy together for about 2 years and they were best buddies. They would even sleep in the same spot as each other. The thing is these guy's will live to the age of 15 plus so may change their behavour when they are adults. If you do go for it you'd better have a backup plan to seperate them at some point in their lives

That pretty much confirms what I have read . My sw encyclopedia says porcs can be housed together is that true? I don't want to or ever plan on that but just curious now.

I have seen that combo end very, very badly.

Ok then i guess if I ever turn my 125 into a salt tank I will get a dog face . Thanks . I don't know if I should start another thread for this question but as i stated in my first post my main tank is fallow and I noticed at night when I come into the room where the hospital tank is he will take in some water and just very slightly puff up then go back to normal and beg for food . He never did this in his real tank so I'm assuming stress. So I am torn on what to do. My fish are cured of ick but my tank has been fallow for 3 weeks which is not enough time but what is worse just keeping him stressed in the ht or risk putting him back in the dt. That's my dilemma currently and any input is appreciated.

I have seen young ones do ok together. But it's still a 50/50 chance though. I have seen many large marine puffers be housed together for many many years with no problems. I think marine species of puffers tend to be less aggressive then BW and most FW puffer. But there always one that will kill or beat up on most fishes in the marine tank. But most of what I have seen over the years and in public tanks, they do very well together. But like I mentioned that it is still a 50/50 chance.

Not necessarily stress--they puff for practice sometimes, too.

Ok i didn't know they puffed for practice . That explains a lot of his earlier puffs . These aren't full puffs he just seems startled at times. His spines don't even go up that's how little he has been expanding . I just want to get him back in his home ASAP .
