Puffer in a planted tank?

Just a bit of a whim really, I'm re-doing my biggest planted tank over the coming weeks, and I wanted to move away from tons of teeny fish to a few bigger fish. My initial plan was angelfish. Then I got thinking, I wonder if there's a FW puffer I could keep as a singleton in a planted tank? Tank won't have co2 or any fancy-shmancy stuff. Soil substrate with sand and stone mix on top, so diggers are pretty much out.

Any ideas if there's anything out there I could look into? Couldn't have a big lump like a Fahaka, have to be a bit smaller! Around Mushroom's size ideally.

Can't say I fancy the possible dentistry! In the UK it's classed as surgery, so it's a vet job. To my knowlegde, not legal to do it yourself Legalities aside, I'm not brave enough anyway!

Will have to check, ashamed to say I can't remember the tank size!! 150-200L odd, something like that I think, but I may be totally wrong. I'm rubbish, so I have all my tank sizes written down in my fishy notebook for when I'm working things out...lol

I was thinking something around the 4-6" mark. Possibly. Possibly sangelfish! It's just an idle thought at the moment, but I'd like to consider it.

Any chance of naming a few to look at for me so I can go off and do some swotting please?

Lol! sangelfish... That's a crossbreed between SAPs and angelfish y'know. Very clever what these scientists can do with genetic modification these days...

I don't know how I ended up quoting myself, but after you get the tank size... your other options would be DP's or F8's.

The F8's would requite java fern or something similar that can tolerate a bit of salt.

I've already got a fig 8, and dps I'd rather not. Hows that for fussy...lol If I was to have a puffer, I'd prefer a larger single puffer. (even though dps are teeny and cute!!) Call it 175L for now!! lol. Just wanted a few puffs to go googling on, if nothing else, I'll learn something new about a new puffer.

Love the irrubesco, very pretty. Will have a proper look

The C.Irrubesco or the C.Salivator would be your best bet for a planted tank that you dont want extreme digging to be done like Congo's and Arrowhead's. Both are extremely nasty but well worth keepin. I have see both in beautiful planted tanks, so you could start out with a small on from either one of those also.

And no puffer would make good tankmates with angelfish, too nippy.

Don't worry, I was thinking puffers or angels, not both together I'd initially planned a planted angelfish tank, but if it would be suitable for a puffer instead, a planted puffer tank would be brilliant

I did spot the avocado puffer under the name golden puffer, can imagine they'd be impossible to find! Look really interesting, they don't look like a puffer to me, if that makes sense! On most of the pictures I saw they've got really big fins.
One I really loved the look of was T. Abei, I love their colouring. Can see them being totally impossible to find too though

So, my list of puffs to look into properly so far;

Avocado
T. Abei
C. Irrubesco (can more than one be kept together?)

Ones I've spotted;

Tetraodon leiurus
Tetraodon schoutedeni - looks like a gsp, can see that being a problem
And Carinotetraodon borneensis is gorgeous, and probably non existant

Plenty to go researching I just like looking at pictures of puffers y'know...lol

Palembang's puffer is excellent in planted tanks. They do not dig at all IME, but do need driftwood (or rock or ceramic) shelters to lurk in or on top of. The lurkers in general are not very active at all, but are still quite cool fish.
