Depends on the individual puffer.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

I have to say the general consensus is that a puffer is the ultimate wild card kinda like what PP said. While others look at them as a cute and cuddly version of a piranha and should be kept alone unless you want something to become an eventual snack.

Im removing the 2 yellow tail damsels this weekend , they are the only other tiny fish with the exception of my Diamond goby . My wife was trying to scold him like a dog, telling him he was a bad Petey at 4:30 in the morning! LMAO!

Some will allow tankmates and some wont.
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

My porc has eaten 1 fish that i know of, the saddleback clown ( black and white) , a domino damsels was killed but not eatten ( blk and wht) , and about 5 months ago a coral catfish came up missing when he was in a 29g tank ( again blk and wht) . He is currently housed with 4 other fish . I have a Coral Beauty Angel Fish ,a Diamond Goby,a Peach Damsels and a Humbug damsel ( blk and wht) . I dont know for sure if the blk and wht things means anything just odd how all the deaths were that color, but they were all fish that slept out in the open so they were easy prey to a night predator. They were also much smaller then him in size. Just a few things ive noticed!
170G Picasso Trigger, snails,Damsels, Coral Beauty Angelfish and Diamond Goby .

Yellow Tangs are evil in their temperment, and puffers have a habit of killing things that get on their nerves. If algae is the only issue you could look at a blenny. I have a bullet goby in with Camille that pulls double duty as both a sand sifter and algae muncher.

Re: Yellow Tang And Porcupine Puffer Fish
I have had success with yellow tangs and porcupine puffers. I found porcupine puffers to be more docile. However yellow tangs will not eat hair algae. Mimic tangs and kole yellow eye tangs work best for hair alger you may also want to look at lawn mower blenies all will work fine with porcupine puffer.
