hawaiian spotted puffer?

Anyone have experience with the Hawaiian Spotted Puffer (Canthigaster jactator) ?

Still going over my potential choices for next puffer. Pretty likely I'll hold out until I can find a bigger GSP and acclimate him to SW but ialso really like the looks of the Hawaiian spotted online.

Thanks for any info on their personality etc.

I have one and, as I posted in your other thread, he's a clown. He's just as outgoing as a GSP, but a bit more 'zippy'. He will do his little beg dance as soon as he sees me peeking around the corner into the room that his tank is in. He was very easy to get eating, he is very active (uses up the entire space of the tank), he isn't shy of anyone, but he's a little nipper that tries repeatedly to eat my fingers.

He's also quite interesting because when he sleeps he can 'velcro' to any surface; usually he sleeps stuck to the glass! It's bizarre!

I love my little guy, though he's not a common type of Tobie around here. Just to give you an idea of how charming he is, I vowed never to get into SW but when I saw him at the LFS dancing at me... Yeah... I gave in pretty quick.

Thank you for the info! Do you happen to have any photos of him? I just saw your in NY (we're new to NJ) did you get him locally? I was considering getting one from nyaquatics.com (purchased a few other fish from him a few months ago, great experience and very healthy fish)

Here are some bad pics (the pics are little blurry, my camera isn't the best) in my thread I made right after I bought him. The only way to capture his personality would be through a video, but unfortunately the only way I could do that is with the same crappy camera. viewtopic.php?t=8157

You can get the idea though. His eyes are bright jade green with gold edges... he's a gorgeous fish.

I bought him locally at a LFS up here in Central New York. I never see these guys, usually Valentinis or plain old 'Sharpnosed Puffers'. It was pretty recently though (about a month), so maybe some distributors have delivered some to your area.

I've never bought livestock online, but my guy seems very hardy considering the long journey he underwent coming here from Hawaii, so ordering online from a reputable dealer should be fine. Keep us updated if you get one!

I have a Pink Spotted and he is an angel. His tank mates are Firefish, Jewel Damsel, Blue Head Wrasse, Dash Dot Goby, Chocolate Chip Starfish, varous crabs and snails. He has never bothered anything.
He's very interactive and when I enter the room he spazzes out. They're really cool too when they're happy there spots change from white to blue, especially when you feed them. I'll post a video of em spazzing out when I feed the tank tomarrow.
I got mine in North Dakota, so they're available pretty much anywhere, if I can get em here, you can get em lol.

I've been looking at this puffer too ever since my fugu disappeared from the tank (it's been 2 weeks so I don't think she's alive anymore). Do they eat corals?

Yep! Definitely one of the more active and playful tobies.

Some eat corals and some don't, it's hit or miss with each individual puffer. I've had a Pink Spotted that was nice, a Paupen Toby that was a SOB, and GSP's weren't shrimp friendly.
