Also fish store guy told me they need to be on freshwater first not brackish
Sort of unsure about that recommendation

Keep in fresh and adjust to low end brackish if you wish . My mudskipper is currently in fresh , i did plan on acclimatising upto brackish but to be honest he's doing so well in fresh I don't think i'll bother .
