how long can you leave lights on a tank with live rock to avoid algae growth? (20watt light)

I think about 8 hours a day is what most people try to keep to.

I run about 12-14 hrs daily, I have some hair algae (actually just on 1 rock), but it hasn't expanded in months.
I'm pretty sure I have a blue thumb.

My lights are on a timer and run for about 9 hours a day. I do have a small patch of hair algae that I allow to grow in the tank because my puffer and bullet goby both graze on it, but if it starts growing anywhere else I just scrape it off.
