Re: Tetra Safestart Test
well to be more precise , its a biological aquarium supplement , that aids in the cycling process by eliminating ammonia and nitrite !! .....so all in all it does work and is a good useful product ..so there !! lol

Re: Tetra Safestart Test
It does not eliminate anything. It is dead bacteria in a bottle. It may feed nitrifying bacteria but so does fish poop!

Re: Tetra Safestart Test
Yes, there may have been live bacteria in there when it was bottled but it all died sitting on the shelf. No claims that the bacteria is LIVE. They even claim it's only a water conditioner. I've been doing this for over 37 years. I'm very familiar with this product.

Re: Tetra Safestart Test
Not to be argumentative just for the sake of, but without a properly controlled, monitored and documented experiment, you cannot just say that the product worked. I mean of course, technically you can say anything, but without having anything solid to support your claims, you could say a magic meatloaf plant crapped in your aquarium and cycled it instantly, it would have the same effect.
Either way, this thread is about whether or not Tetra Safestart works as it claims, so that we can have something to refer people to when they are in a situation that would benefit from this product. Please keep that in mind, throwing out unsupported randoms claims about an entirely different product isn't very helpful. But feel free to conduct and document your own experiment in a new thread if you would like to if you wish to defend your claims on Cycle.

Re: Tetra Safestart Test
One more comment--of course Hagen is going to claim their product works. They are trying to sell it! Many of us have been there, tried that product. Some here have been in the hobby 20 years longer than myself & still claim it to be garbage dead bacteria in a bottle. Nothing new here.

Re: Tetra Safestart Test
actually i disagree , i was simply stating the fact that i and other fellow fishkeepers have used cycle with great success . And seeing as this thread was about a similar product on the market , it seems most relevant . thankyou .

Re: Tetra Safestart Test
having a product neutralize the harmful ammonia and nitrite in an aquarium is not new... that is a chemical added to allow "fish in" cycling.
if you follow me, you avoid stepping in the crap that I just did...

Day 24
pH 7.2
KH 6°
Ammonia 0.0
Nitrite 0.0
Nitrate <20.0
Changes: Small water partial, and I have added 4 Odessa Barbs, I well have to pick up 1 or 2 more. I considered stocking the tank with Cardinal Tetras, but decided to save them for another tank for a Llanos Biotope.

Re: Tetra Safestart Test
Shall I get a bottle of cycle, and test it?. I doubt it will do anything though.
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Did you buy the moss mounted on the wood like that? I see aquatic gardens is selling it.

Re: Tetra Safestart Test
No, I bought the wood from a man in California, and the flame moss off of the Planted Tank Forum, it's super glued and tied on.
I still have enough wood left over to set up a 4' tank easily, I bought a bulk lot for $50 including shipping
I'm setting up a Ram Cichlid tank for my husband.
