Damn you're all making me want a mantis shrimp!!! But my sole purpose for getting into saltwater was to have hermit crabs and I don't want them to become shrimp food

Any way that a small one could live in a 2.5g? Could I even find small ones somewhere?

I wouldn't really go smaller than 5g. Reef Central has a Stompapod forum.

See this too for species ideas and help IDing them.

The small ones are harder to get. Many LFS can order in peacock mantis shrimp but I'd go 25 gls or better for one. You probably want a gonodactylus smithii or similar for a 10g and an even smaller species for a smaller tank.
