New Oscar in the house

Post by DMD123 »

So I had been trying to get a fish I would be happy with for my 72 gallon bowfront. After lots of duds in combinations of fish, I finally decided to go with a good old fashioned Oscar. The one I got was from Rapp's at tangledupincichlids.com, it was a San Paulo 'Bumblebee'.

They are unique in the fact they show a vertical stripe patterning with yellow coloration and almost no red showing.

Thank you! Ive been keeping all types or rare cichlids over the years and figured if I was going with an Oscar it might as well be a rare type.

I know it looks like a certain 'Capone' we both know of. I compared the two in side by side pics and there is a family resemblance for sure. Very likely from same batch and probably siblings.

No gangsta name, I am leaning toward 'Shadow' because in its verb form it has the meaning: stalk, pursue, hunt. This is what he tends to do while feeding. All my other cichlids just kind of chow down and he looks to stalk and hunt his food a bit more. Just an idea... not 100% set on the name.

Shadow is cool! Just know he won't stay a shadow for long. It's more like..."I'm eating that. I ate it. It's gone".

I wonder if you got male or female. Wish it was easy to tell.

The eating habits will likely get very Oscar-like as it gets more comfortable. I really dont want to name another fish based on eating habits... my Pearsei is already named Porkchop.

Thank God--someone properly housing an Oscar! My dad always kept one in a 15g.
Wondered why it kept jumping out... :durr:
One wound up in the cat's mouth! :catfish:

The 72g bow to me is at the minimum. The center of the bow is 18" wide so hopefully I dont end up with some monster Oscar. It is rumored that Rapp's raised one of these Bumblebees to 16", that would be pushing limits for sure in my tank. I could always move it into my 210g, but that tank is just right for stock and everyone gets along, so I want to leave well enough alone. I guess I could always look for a bigger tank... wife would love that!

What are the dimensions of the 210? What filtration is on there? I'm thinking of upgrading.

Your 72 bow will be fine. They really don't swim around much once they get older. They sort of stay in one spot or glide around. As long as you maintain everything (I know you will) a 72 would be awesome.

It has the standard 72" x 24" footprint, same as the 180g but taller. It is a total pain to clean!

My Pearsei is a big fish at about 13" but really thick. I cant imagine an Oscar that big in the tank but Im sure it will work. The tank is well filtered with an AC110 and a Ehim 2217 but Im thinking of adding one more HOB filter, likely another AC110.
