I've had this puffer I named Blue for over a year until about two weeks ago when I came home from college to find him lying behind my tank I don't know how he got out considering the tank was entirely closed. Needless to say I was really sad about this as he was the best puffer I've ever had, his personality was amazing. I was looking into purchasing another but I'm a little confused as to what he really is. When I bought him he was listed as a Hawaiian Blue Toby (Canthigaster papau). But the False-eye Puffer or Sharpnosed Puffer (Canthigaster solandri) looks greatly alike as well.
here is blue
any ideas would be greatly appreciated
What kind of puffer is this???

Sorry to hear about your loss, he is a really cute little guy!
I read a really interesting article here....
http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2005/5/fish
about the differences between a Canthigster Papua and Canthigaster Solandri. They were long thought to be the same fish, but once you see pictures of them both you realise they are quite different- the Solandri's colouration involves more 'spots' than 'lines'. I think your puffer was a Canthigaster Solandri, but if you read the article it might help you identify him!
Hope this helps,
Bonnie

thanks everyone...I still miss him a lot, but accidents happen, right?
and bonnie, thank you very much for that article, it was really interesting... I was just so confused before because when I went to this site to look into purchasing another puffer- http://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11_03 ... arent_id=4 they have this one listed as a hawaiian blue, but I think he looks more like the other...so I just wanted to double check, definitely
