My new immaculate puffer

Post by Sterling »

Hi everyone

So after waiting for my tank to cycle like a good girl I finally got my "dog face puffer ". But when they caught him at the shop I saw his tail and was 100% sure it's an immaculate puffer but didn't say anything until he was paid for because he was basically $14 lol. So currently it is him at around 11cm excluding tail and a maroon clown about 8cm excluding tail in a 50gal tank. Before you kill me the setup is temporary just need to convert my 6ft tank for them.

The puff seems very happy and already nipping at the base rock in the tank.

Now 2 questions
Was I right in thinking it's an immaculate puffer?
And is it worth it to buy live rock if he is already picking at the base rock?

Thanks

I love the yellow lips, eyes and tails on these guys. Don't you have any live rock in your tank? How are you filtering the tank? Can we have some more pix/vids please :)

Lights are off for now ,will take more pics tomorrow. So far they seem to pretty much ignore each other. I have base rock which is basically a cheap and not so pretty form of live rock and also acts as a form of filter media. For now I have an internal filter, a HOB and a extra powerhead for current also going to do a 20% water change weekly. Just need to buy a pump for my skimmer. Planning to keep them in there for max 6months. By then my 6ft should be ready for them.

This isn't the best way to keep a marine tank. Basically, you're running SW as a FW system, which means 50% weekly WC, which is going to get quite $$$ for you. You had the time to cycle correctly--not sure why you didn't?

Start curing LR in a bucket & get a HOB protein skimmer.

I have a HOB skimmer just need to buy the pump that goes with it.
Base rock is basically live rock so not sure what I'm missing besides the skimmer? My question was should I invest in the more expensive more good looking live rock?

Base rock is NOT LR. LR has 100s of live detritus-eating creatures in it & it will also "seed" the sand with them to make the sand "live", too. They are the active filtrates of your water. If you want to use those shells, you're going to have to shake the food/detritus out of them during your WC. What kind of sand is that?

At the moment the sand is a mix of stuff including aragonite and crushed coral. The rocks I got from an established tank as well as about 3/4 of the water. I was just worried the puffer would destroy the more expensive live rock. But if you think it's best I will buy more live rock. I will also remove the shells to help prevent the build up of nasty stuff. I'm getting more aragonite substrate after pay day.

I love watching my puff scan and pick at the live rock. I have not found it to be detrimental to the live rock in any way.

From the link you sent me
" Beginning a reef tank using seeded base live rock as the center stones of the aquarium is not a bad idea. Once the base rock is established, then you can begin to add, slowly, more advanced types of live rock."
And that is exactly what I did.
Another site talks about culturing live rock from base rock. http://www.base-rock.com/
Also just to clear things up a bit about a third of the rock I used is old (dead) live rock that I got from a friend who hasn't used it in years so it is very porous.

Yes, base (dead) rock can become live after many months, if seeded with LR. I didn't see where you've mentioned you added any LR from an established tank. The less LR you add to base rock, the longer it takes to become LR & the more WC you will continue to have to do on the tank, until the base rock is established LR.

I apologize for not adding where I got the rock. So basically more live rock and to get my skimmer going asap?
Also just to double check, was I correct in thinking this is an immaculate puffer?
