Puffer ID

Post by scpion »

Hi! It's labelled as China Puffer Fish at my Lfs.. And here, we are notorious for wrongly labelled puffer. Looks like a fugu to me. The 1st pic is lifted of a website where they raise puffer for consumption.. "idiots"..... They are raised in a FW environment. Is it truly FW?

Hey scpion, why don't you go sw and get a porcupine or a dogface? The tank you have would be big enough wouldn't it?

That's not T. niphobles, it's T. obscurus, the quite big relative of T. ocellatus. Up to 40 cm (16 inches) without tail. Can be kept the same way. Is euryhaline (occurs in fresh-brackish and marine water), bit for long term success I'd recommend marine. They are bred (with the help of hormones) in China as expensive food.

Thanks Corvus. I can never understand why in the world would they want to eat them.. I mean there are so many things out there that are tasty but those people choose to get kicks out from them. I saw culinary show and they cost upwards of $1k for a fish..
