Valentini puffer tank mates

Post by Henchman »

I have a female Valentini puffer & was wanting to get a starfish. Is there a type of starfish that the Valentini wouldn't eat or should I just forget the idea of a starfish. I have been reading up on this type of puffer trying to find as much information as possible. I have had this fish for about 2 months now. I am wanting to know what specific types of corals can be kept with a valentini puffer & what types of corals it will eat? Is there any snail or coral I should buy for it to eat?

Valentini puffers reaction to corals in tank
frogspawn coral - leaves it alone / could care less about
zoanthids - leaves them alone / could care less about
candy cane coral - takes bites at the heads occasionally (barely any damage caused but still a concern)
monti cap frags - leaves alone / could care less

Valentini puffers reaction to tankmates
pair of percula clowns - playful (clown fish slowly swim away from puffer when she comes towards them)
male flame angel - playful (they get along really well - swim near each other frequently)
cleaner shrimp - cleaner shrimps usually chills on live rock not much interaction, cleaner shrimp was cleaning the puffer when first introduced to tank.
bites at live rock possibly feeding on something
bites at small white asternia starfish

feeding of valentini puffer
frozen krill
frozen clams
rod's food predatory type
snails
pellets

Tank size? How deep is your sand bed? What kind of seastar are you interested in?

I have a 40 gallon tank. The sand bed is shallow about 2 inches except an area near the return which is almost bare. I would like to get a fromia star fish. A few pictures of my tank are below (the full tank shot is about 9 months ago when I only had the pair of clowns) The newer picture showing all 4 fish I have is a few months old. The picture of the starfish is from a lfs near me which is some red fromia & a blue linkia I believe.

I have a sand sifting star and I don't think Lila has ever even noticed it.

Edit: I have never seen her pick on the little asternia stars, but she does bite at little invisible things on new pieces of live rock I add to the tank

In my many years experience in this hobby, I've never been able to keep any fromia/linkia species alive for any length of time.

I have a red brittle star about 1foot across from tip to tip I wonder is a valentini would leave it alone? Or likely being a puffer rip it to shreds? Sorry if I seem to be hijacking but you got me thinking
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

So a porc would kill it. How about a toby like the valentini?
