Ok setting up a new 29 gallon reef tank and my plan fish wise is:
1 clown
1 diamond watchman goby
1 valentini
2 cardinals

Inverts:
1-2 red skunk cleaner shrimp
1 sea urchin
1 sand sifting star
numerous soft corals such as polyps, LPS, ect..
1 or 2 anemones
30 or so lbs of live rock

Will this work with the valentini? One LFS i went to told me oh ya this will work, then another said NO, don't get a valentini.
Thoughts?

Too small for all that life in there.

Lose the shrimp, sand sifting star and an anemone?

I would keep the bottom feeders and loose a fish or two. Those who live on the bottom are often so underrated. Scrap the clown ( they can be nasty boogers) also scrap the cardinals, focus on the valentini. Build the tank around your first fish choice

+1 also along the same lines, don't forget how much water volume you are losing with the LR a sump or refugium would help you out.

How about a single dwarf lion to replace the cards and clown? Also I am going out of town in mid sept, should I just leave it empty untill then?

People around here will never suggest keeping a puffer and a lion together.

I agree completely. 1 valentini or 1 lion or 3 cardinals or 2 clownfish. NO anemones in a tank that small.

I didn't even notice the anemone, they need to be introduced into a mature tank that is a year or older and require a ton of light plus a larger tank very difficult to keep.
