Can't belive my luck Fahaka in NZ

Post by loginthesand »

Hey guys and girls
I have recently found an importer in New Zealand who likes bringing in the out of the norm fish and has two fahakas for sale, unseen in NZ for years, as far as I can tell. I immediately called and have reserved one for my self. I have a 750l (6'x2.5') planted aquarium set up with larger community fish that I will be housing him in after I have rehomed the current occupants. Until then he will be in a 200l for at most a month. Both tanks have pool filter sand substrate and drift wood and are fully cycled receiving a 33% water change weekly with rain water. I have owned an Amazon puffer in the past but never a large puffer. The large tank is currently being filtered with a fx6. And the Fahaka I have reserved is about 10cm(4")
So question is, have you got any advice/suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Hey so I did a new set of test on my quarantine tank and heres the results
pH:7.0
Ammonia:0
Nitrite:0
Nitrate:10
GH:<1
KH:<1
Temp:26'C
Should I be worried about the gh and kh readings? He arrives in three days, is this enough time to buffer and stabilize the water?

Thanks pufferpunk, read somewhere not to put fahakas in soft water, but wanted an expert opinion. "Big sigh of relief"

I just moved my fahaka up from a 125g to a 180g & now I can't imagine him in anything smaller!

He gets shipped today arrives tomorrow, my feet are getting itchy. Thinking about getting a UV steriliser, anyone had any experience with them.

I know I love the marking on his face. He's already eying the fish in the big tank next door, I'll be moving them this weekend. Will add some better photos once he's less shy.

So this may be a little late and useless now but figured I'd jump in anyways :P

I'm in Australia and I'm having a hard time finding an importer for Fahaka's as well, could you post the link/company that imported him? If they go to NZ they should come to Aus I hope.

A UV sterilizer needs very slow flow to allow full treatment of the water. Unless your water is turning green I wouldn't recommend it and even then I think there's an easier course of action.

Let's have an update on the little guy, hows it going!
