From what I have heard about the spec v is that the light is not bright enough for most plants. You can go with some lower light plants such and crypts, anubias nana, and some moss. Co2 will benefit all plants but are not required especially by plants that will be able to grow under the low light levels of the spec v. Ferts can be added but again not required. As long as you are feeding nutritious foods, the food and fish waste should provide your plants with the nutrients they need.

Basically you will be running a low tech planted tank if you decide to go this route. The other end of the spectrum "hightech" would be very high light levels, Co2 injection, and ei dosing. Both have their ups and downs but if just starting out with plants low tech is a great route.
