PufferID Help

Post by Exiga »

Saw this 4" / 5" puffer at my local fish shop. Was told it is a freshwater puffer. But need help with its ID.

Any help would be much appreciated...

[welcome]
That does not look like any FW puffer I've ever seen. I hope he's not crammed into a tiny tank like that! :(

Yup. So I was wondering if anyone could help ID whether it be a freshwater / brackish / saltwater type...

I do know it is being kept in freshwater for now...

I am keen to purchase it, just that I would like to make sure I know its correct ID and it is truly a freshwater puffer.... :?

That's that special Chelonodon, again.
Am in a hurry and likely won't be back till Monday.
Please use the forum search (you can use my name (Corvus) as user and Chelonodon as search term in ther fields of the search engines), you will find several thread on this species.

Yesh, high-end BW to SW. SW is much easier to maintain. Are you gonna buy him?

Think I will have to KIV this for now, as if don't have a saltwater setup... :(

Was just reading up that a variant of the Chelnodon was found in fresh water habitat in India, which could be where they found this chap....In any case, hope it can survive its freshwater tank in the LFS...I hope to speak with the LFS owner again and see what he says.... :?

You can start him off in FW, bring the tank slowly up to BW & then slowly transition to SW.

That's a thought....in any case, I will first check with the LFS on how long they have had the fish, which would indicate whether it has settled down / acclimatized to a freshwater setting for a start... :)
