how to tell the sex of a gsp

Post by Arny »

Hey guys I just saw a post on a facebook group dedicated to puffers and a girl on there said she could tell the sex of a gsp. I didnt think that was possible.
Here's her way of telling a male from a female:-
males will have brighter colors than the female, he also has a long torpedo shape body. The female will have less green and more brown also she will be shorter and fatter

I think that person is confused/guessing. Females may swell with eggs if the conditions are right. Even the most experienced puffer experts can't tell them apart
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

What group is this?

Never mind.. Found it, corrected some info, called all sorts of names & left, all in about 1/2 hour. What's wrong with people??? Telling me to stop referring to Wickipedia? When do I ever do that?

We don't even know if they have separate genders or if they are hermaphrodites. They could also change their gender through life like many other fishes.
In addition, there is this one study from the Univ. of Florida in which GSP were bred (using hormones to induce the development of eggs) and although they had lots of specimens they had no clue which were functioning as females or males except the development of eggs. Claims of people who "know" how to sex GSPs should be taken with a lot of scepticism.
Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Give a fish a man, and he'll eat for weeks.

Not very friendly to me! I only lasted 1/2 hour, before they were asking me to leave. They don't like being corrected. One of the Admins there had nothing good to say about this site. Nick Maynard is the fellow offering to help out here.

Do they know you run this forum?
I think they're just worried as soon as people start going to the links for TPF everyone there will just end up coming straight here for advise. I posted a link from here on there and the main admin replied why go to TPF when you can get all your info here on FB

That is just truly childish! You go over and offer some correct info and just get insulted. You are better off out of it, I won't even view that page because I will likely get the same responses, pointless
