Fluviatilis or Nigroviridis

Post by sasg »

Hello,

I come towards you in order to ask of the assistance on the identification of my puffer.

I hesitate between nigroviridis and Fluviatilis because of his mark over the back. it measures 3.5cm.

It is in an tank with a density 1005 for the moment, but I increase slowly.

what do you think about it?

i can see your problem!

He does have a small saddle across his back, similar to that of a fluviatilis... but i'm not convinced.. the saddle is very small and there are alot of regular spots as well...

so i'd say it was nigroviridis... green spot puffer...

but time will tell, as the puffer gets bigger it's markings will become more defined...

here's my fluviatilis.. see how big the saddle markings across his back are....

Yeah, tricky one.

My newest Green Spot has some "blotching" rather like saddles but not to the extent of yours.

But.. my friend's Ceylon has fairly small saddles along the top of his head with regular spots at the side. :?

I agree with t1gerbee though, the older he / she gets the easier it will get for sure.

Luckily enough, Green Spot or Ceylon, they both prefer similar water parameters.

I would classify it as a Ceylon (Fluviatilis), since it does seem to have a similar colour pattern. You'll know when it matures, because GSPs are slightly smaller (usually a couple inches smaller) than Ceylons. :)

Either way, s/he is a VERY beautiful puffer, and I hope everything goes well with you! :D

Having looked at the pics I'd say it was a Nigroviridis, most ceylons look more like F8s from the top with much smaller spotting lower down

yea id also agree with a GSP only because i have seen a coupld with connected spots that looked almost like a saddle when they were young but grew out of it, i think it has to many regular defined spots on the side to be a cyelon but thats just my opinion.

Looks very similar to those originally described as T. sabahensis and T. kretamensis. There are some other discussions on this forum on similar colored small possible GSPs. To me it is not well understood, how these species can be told apart.

Care for them is probably very similar anyway, so let's wait and see how this one develops.

Fluviatilis have spots on their sides & belly. Yours has a white tummy. I'd say nigroviridis. I'm not sure what a young sabahensis looks like.

It would seem that nobody is of agreement.
Summary on 8 posts.:
Ceylon (Fluviatilis): II
GSP (Nigrovirdis): III
to await adult size: III

The opinions are really divided.

Thanks to you I have find his name : Le Fourbe (~the deceitful). :-)

sasg, whatever your puffer is, it is not a fluviatilis. On fluviatilis the bands are always in a right angle to the long axis of the fish when looked at from above. Your last picture shows this is not the case.

But, as Agnate indicated, young fluviatilis can have unspotted bellies like GSP.
Look at this one: http://www.amtra.de/images/X91121_425.jpg
