20G puffer suggestions?

Post by JustMe »

Hi! I am gonna get a 20g tank for a puffer fish. But Im not sure which puffer to get, and I would want a freshwater puffer fish that stays in freshwater its whole life and doesnt need anything bigger then a 20g tank.

Also I would like a puffer thats on the bigger side but only big enough to fit in my 20g freshwater tank. BUT the most important thing is which puffer will be the most active? I was looking at the abei puffer fish but its more on the lurking side so does that mean that abei puffers will just not move too much? Actually my top choice right now are almost any species in the "Monotrege" family. Thanks for everything!

The puffer that pops into my mind is the Golden puffer, Auriglobus modestus:

You could also keep a pair of any of the Carinotetraodon species:

All of those are lurkers--probably the abei.

So among the 3 abei puffer is the most active and fun to watch? I know because they are lurkers they are not as active like a dwarf puffer or something like that but I wanted an small to medium sized aquarium and wanted a fish thats not to small because its the only fish Ill have in the tank. And so far I have found a congo puffer in my lfs, still on the hunt to see if I can find a hairy or a abei. Hairys are rare right?

I got my Hairy from Wetspot. I NEVER see him, unless it's feeding time. Very cool fish though!

So I guess their behaviour varies? After a bit more thinking I really like the hairy puffer now... Its my top pick, I still have a month or two to decide which puffer I want so lots of thinking haha, hopefully which ever puffer I get is gonna be a good one :D

Also does hairy puffers need hard foods to trim their beaks or lurker species dont really overgrow their beaks? What diet should I have if I have a hairy puffer? Thanks for replying btw just wanna make sure I get a happy puffer
