Fresh water puffer for 65 gallon planted tank

Post by aquatame »

Hi everyone,
I have kept fish in many countries during my time as a hobbiest.
Freshwater planted, brackish and reef aquariums, but I have only once kept a puffer fish.
My main question is what would be the best freshwater puffer to keep in a 65 gallon planted tank.
I want the fish to be the main focus of the tank so I would prefer a species that grows to 6 -10 inches. Also along with you puffer suggestions, I would welcome suggestions on tankmates.
Looking forward to your suggestions.
Thanks
Jon

[welcome]
Most puffer species (certainly one that grows larger) must be kept as a singleton. A Palambgensus would do well in there but if it's heavily planted, you may not see it often. You may also be hard-pressed to find any of the more rare FW species, locally. Check the FW section of our Pufferpedia, found under the Learn tab above.

if you don't mind a bit of teeth trimming you could go for a 'shoal' of South American Puffers.

I tried posting a similar question in a separate thread, but specifically wondering opinions on how many DPs y'all might suggest I could put in a 65 gallon well planted tank? I'm not new to puffers at all, currently have a 2" baby Fahaka in the 65, and have also kept about 8 species of FW and BW puffers over the last 10 years or so. Just like the thought of a swarm of DPs in the tank along with a few otos.

Sorry for the hijack and thanx!
