Tank mates for Dwarf Puffers

Post by lufc1958 »

Hi, I am new to the forum and thought I would share my experiences with other members of the forum. The question of which tank mates for Dwarf Puffers is often asked. Well, I have two Dwarf Puffers who quite happily co-habit with two Otto catfish and three African Dwarf Frogs. The puffers & the ADF's eat the same type of food and can often can be seen eating side by side, although the frogs sometimes tend to chase them away.

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately the frogs will unlikely be safe long term. The puffers will nip at anything slow
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

If anything I'd be more worried that when full grown they will eat the puffers. Even dwarf african frogs can get 2.5 inches or so in length and like their larger more agressive cousins the African clawed frog of the xenopus genus, will eat ANYTHING they can fit into their mouths.

I am not a fan of any aquarium frogs. I had an albino dwarf frog growing up and we watched it eat half our Fish. I would get the frogs out of the tank!

Thanks for the feedback guys. The puffers & the ADF's have been in the tank for a couple of months now with no agression shown by either. Having researched the ADF's on various websites they do not pose a threat to the puffers even when fully grown. I don't know how the puffers will react to them in the future but for now they seem to ignore them even when feeding side by side.

I would not have any concern for the puffers whatsoever. The frogs are in grave danger, the dps will bite off what they want ( normally the head but generally part of the head) and the frogs die slowly. Please seperate them

You can always give the frogs their own little tank :) I was considering getting one to go with my betta as he seems docile to snails... I've had a few over the months about 11 years ago...
