Friend setting up new tank

Post by Dflo »

Hello all, I have a friend that is currently cycling a 29 gal tank. He is looking at Figure 8 puffer for tank once ready. What are some other possible tank mates anybody recommends. Thanks for everyone's help as always

Possibly a bumble bee goby. But whether the fig8 will tolerate a tankmate will vary from fish to fish.

This is posted in the FW puffer section. Are you & your friend aware the F8 belongs in BW?

I've kept mine with a few species:

1. Waspfish.
2. Halfbeak.
3. Bumblebee Gobies.

Out of them all I can only recommend the Gobies as the halfbeak was too aggressive and the Waspfish was too slow and the fins would be too tempting for a more aggressive puffer.

Fish I can't recommend through personal experience but that I'm considering for my future larger tank are:

1. Celebes Rainbowfish
2. Humpback Limia.
3. Orange Chromide.

I have always wanted Orange Chromides but since they are cichlids they may be a tad too aggressive.

He will be setting as a BW tank but starting as fresh since that's what they are in at LFS. Would he be better starting with a puffer that is more freshwater? If so what are some recommendations. Sorry for all of the questions just want to make sure he all the info possible and what will be safe for the fish

Figure 8's require very little salt so there is little benefit in starting fresh but if they are in fresh water at the LFS then by all means start at fresh and then do your first water change after a week upping the salinity by no more than SG0.002.

The Pufferpedia under the 'Learn' heading lists a number of freshwater species available, there are a few species that will suit that size tank but I don't have personal experience with any.
