Haha, I remember getting my first 55g. Me and my family thought it was massive :)

Well considering it's almost twice as big as my current biggest tank and I've mostly just had ten gallon tanks for the past 10 years... Yeah it's a big step lol

Fifty-fives are handy tanks for easy displays of fish which do not get too big. They are a bit "thin" front-to-back for fish such as GSPs, but work fine for smaller specimens or schools. Many non-fishy visitors do not notice the difference between 55s and 75s if you are all adept at aquascaping - but the fish certainly can. Try hard not overload 55s. Too many folks overload them with mixed Cichlids and little or no 'scaping and then they look awful.

Yeah I've noticed that it doesn't seem much bigger than a 10 gallon front to back... And only the 4 puffs are going in it along with Amanos (if they don't eat them!) I'm looking forward to all the room I'll have for plants! :D

Both Val and Sag can help fake depth front-to-back. The choice may depend on your water - I can do either, but not all water will. If your LFS is on the same supply, they will (or should) know which is better for your water supply.

I like single 55s for single cichlids. I have my Texas in one. Perfect for a smallish/medium cichlid.

My next 55 might be for a school if tiger barbs. I love those things. I had some once, until and unfortunate incident.
